I went to my doc today and they scheduled my colonoscopy. July 31 is the lucky day. He said their practice doesn't use the golytely or however you spell it. The new prep is a mixture of gatorade and miralax and then some ducolax. I guess it's supposed to be way easier, not on your stomach but on your taste buds, and it has the same effect as the old way. Anyone ever done it this way?

I did it last year. I think it was 4 dulcolax pills, wait a few hours, then 64 oz gatorade and miralax.

I didn't think it was bad at all. That was the only prep I have had to do, so I can't compare.

I wish! I can't stand that golytely crap, but it's what my old doc always insisted on. That way sounds a lot better!

That was what I used for my last C-scope too. Based on my experience, I would take it more slowly the next time - start earlier and drink the mixture more slowly. I got very sick at my stomach and threw up several times during the night, I suspect because I didn't space the glasses of "cocktail" out enough. Also, stay really, really close to the bathroom. It gave me uncontrollable liquid stools. Hopefully it won't do that to you.

The taste is much better than any of the other preps I've had.

Yeah, that's it only I'm doing it backwards. I'm supposed to drink the gatorade/miralax combo then after I'm all done with that wait an hour and do the 4 ducolax. Was the gatorade/miralax combo gritty? 238g is a lot of powder...does it dissolve well? I heard it doesn't taste bad which is a plus, but I'm worried about stomach cramping...that's a lot of laxatives in a short period of time.

I'm not familar with these preps at all, are you up all night going to the bathroom or is it over in a couple of hours? I'm worried about having an accident by not making it to the bathroom in time or something because I'm half asleep. I have so many questions! I'm kind of scared to be honest.

I did this prep a few weeks ago and it was pretty good.  I throw up golytely, phospho soda, barium, you name but I only threw up a little bit of the miralax.   I took 2 Ducalax at noon and then started the miralax about 2:30pm.  You can mix the Miralax in any 64oz clear liquid that isn't red or purple.  I would start the prep earlier next time because I was up until about 3am pooping.

Hi closure! I had the dulcolax plus a golightly prep for my last one. I think I had a reastion to the dulcolax. I never vomited for a prep before (and I had many!). The dulcolax was the only thing new.

I would say that I was in the potty all night. There are only 5 feet between my bed and bathroom and I did not make it once. I just sat in there for most of the night in case. That might have been the dulcolax on me too - I always slept through the night before.

I would definitely take the stuff slowly like someone else said. I have also always gone on liquid diet for two days earlier just to make it easier - but that is just my preference. Oh and if it tastes bad, remember to wipe your tongue with a paper towl after you swig - this really helped with the barium swallow and I do it for everything I have to drink that is "yucky" now.

I just can't drink that much stuff...my doctor does not like my method, but he agrees that I am clean every time....

24 hours before the procedure :I go clear liquids ...take two or three ducalax in the morning (depends if I have been clogged or flowing prior to that morning)    I take some gas-ex as or if needed...then around 4 that afternoon I drink 3 ounces of the Fleet Phos stuff....by 6 PM  it is like the little lady in the movie "Poltergiest" says..:"This house is clean"

less cramping...no bloating..and for the most part no foul tasting stuff.

I did the miralax prep for my bowel resection last July. It tastes alot better than phospha soda which is what I have always done for a colonoscopy, but my stomach didn't handle the large quantity well. I had severe cramping and only got 2/3 of the total amount down. I had to fight off puking for the rest of the night. It was bad...I cried alot. It might have been nerves on top of it but I was a mess. In general though, I can not drink LARGE amounts of anything in that short of a time period. I think my instructions were to drink 8 oz every 30 mins but I can't say for sure. I absolutely HATE the taste of the phospha soda, but would rather drink just those 3 oz then 64 oz of the other.

GOODLUCK!

closure -

Yep, that's the stuff nuse rachett gave me in the hospital after being off food for three days already. I gulped down the entire huge container in under an hour and then set up camp in the head for a couple of hours (cursing nurse ratchett the entire time). Nasty stuff... but will clear out any/all in your digestive system for sure.

lots of replies and experiences which is very helpful and good...I appreciate you all answering and trying to help...but...I'm not hearing what I wanted to lol. I wanted to hear that it was easy and I definitely wasn't expecting the vomitting stories. ugh. obviously we all have to do it, but I'm scared. I'm glad you've all been honest with me though because I would rather know what to expect than hear a bunch of stories about how it wasn't that bad or whatever and then when I finally do it see that everyone lied to me lol. if anyone else has experiences with this and hasn't shared yet please do. I just want to be prepared as possible. I just have to suck it up and suck it down in 2 weeks.

My brother did the one you are doing and had no problems. I was rx'd half-lytely with 4 pills (aka GUT TORTURE LYTELY). . . NEVER again!! I was SO nauseous . . . . *sighhhhh*. I will never take that stuff again. If I have to do another prep, I'll sneak the one you are doing. From all I've read, that's the way to go. I've also done the phospho soda and had no problem at all. But I read that its hard your kidneys *sighhhhhh*

Hint: If are at all able, walking around the house seemed to help thing get going . . . Keep the bathroom on your floor off limits to everyone but you (even if everyone else has to leave for the evening). Make sure you wear something you can easily change (I ended up changing 3x . . . ewwwe) I wasn't able to keep up the pace they want for the ounces per hour either . . . it still works fine if you start early and take it more slowly so don't force it too fast.

I've done this two other times w/o any problems but that GUT TORTURE LYTELY is the worst!!! Never again.

Will be watching for your report on how things go!!

Blessings!

I'll definitely keep that in mind about starting early. The tips you all have given are great...thank you. Keem 'em coming if you haven't already! I'm desperate! lol. I really hope I don't have to do this again for a while. I mean I knew it wasn't going to be...fun...but it sounds down right miserable. I don't know how some of you do it so many times. When it's all done and over with you guys will definitely get a full update!

I can so reemphasize with all of you. Golytely or however you spell it was terrible. I couldn't do it, it made me nauseous we called the doc and i did the phos soda which was way better but still not great. I took cried, I was worried I wouldn't be "clean" enough and i'd have to go through it all again. Luckily that wasn't the case and I was diagnosed the first time with a biopsy.

I get Prevention magazine in the mail and always see an ad and a $10 coupon for Osmo Prep. Has anyone ever heard of this or used it? This seems to be the website for the drug: http://www.tabletprep.com/. I was reading through this thread to see if anyone mentioned it but nobody did. Looks like you take some pills and drink your liquid of choice but I can't find on their site how much liquid. To this day from the colonoscopy prep and barium junk I can not force myself to drink a ton of any kind of liquid in a quick manner it makes me want to be sick.

PS: I would just live in the bathroom that day, bring in a TV, some magazines a good book, air freshener LOL

my recommendation for phossoda prep (if you have to take it) is to pour the prep into a shot glass do not dilute it, toss it back like you would a shot. Then sip on gatorade and etc for the rest of the day.

I mix the Ph soda with very cold sprite or 7-up about 2 to 1 and drink it down...I do 2 ounces of the ph soda every 15 minutes for 45 minutes and then make sure the seat belt on my toilet is hooked up

Hi!  I love osmoprep.  It involves taking 32 tablets with fluids over several hours.  The pills are big, but if you don't have pill swallowing issues, that won't be a problem.  And it has no taste at all.  I hate drinking stuff.  I never have nausea, either.  It is a prescription, but other than that, is much better all around.

A grand total of 64 ounces of fluid.  But its anything on the liquid diet so it tastes good.

That's the prep I used 3 times over the past year, and it worked great. (This is the good news you were hoping for!) I didn't get nauseous or sick at all, and it kept me from feeling dehydrated. My doc had me do the dulcolax first though so it would keep me from cramping up. I used the phopho stuff for a surgery and next time (if there is a next time) I'll see about using the other way!

It's good to hear a couple of positive stories lol. I'm going to try to keep an open mind so that I don't worry myself sick, you know? I'm just so glad you guys have been sharing your stories because I would have no clue what to expect. Obviously we're all different so we respond differently, but I'd rather have an idea than nothing at all. My GI didn't tell me much of anything other than "not to plan to go out dancing that night". eyes  He probably didn't want to scare me away so I won't hold it against him too much. Now I just have to get a sleeping bag for the bathroom floor, a bucket to puke in if on the toilet at the same time, and convince the boyfriend to move the tv in there lol...obviously kidding, but doesn't sound that crazy after reading some of the posts here.

I just caught this...off subject, but Kimberlayn, I'm on metoprolol too for heart palpatations...you're the first person I've met on it for that reason too. Just thought that was interesting...back to the talk of colonoscopies and bowel movements lol.

Closure - I have to say the only reason I think that I threw up with this prep was because I mixed it in Limeade. I think that it was to acidic. I only threw up once and that was a few hours after I finished drinking. I took about 3 hours to drink the whole thing. With the other preps I start throwing up within 15 minutes of drinking them and can't keep enough down to clean my colon.

Closure, my colo-rectal surgeon told me to take Miralex and Gatoride for a bowel prep before surgery. He didn't mention the ducolax. I didn't have a problem drinking the stuff, it didn't taste bad at all, it was just very sweet. I've had three bowel preps, each one difference. I'd repeat the Miralex before the other two (Go-Lytely, those osmo pills). Don't forget to use the yellow Gatoride, not red. Good luck!!

I just had a scope 4 weeks ago and this is how I prepped for mine. It was the first time doing it this way and I had no problems. (Again good news you were looking for!!LOL) I don't care for gadorade so it was hard drinking all of it down for me, but I didn't get sick. I was on liquid diet the day before and day of prep. about 4pm I took 4 pills and then at 6pm I had to start drinking. I was able to go to bed about 10pm and sleep through the night. Good luck!
