Some of you may know that I recently started flaring and did a quick 10 day course of Prednisone.  It knocked my flare right down.  I finished it last Friday and Saturday morning I woke up with some really bad pain in my left hip.  When I get up from a sitting or laying position I have extreme pain in my hip that gets a little better as I walk. (Not completely gone, but I do get a little relief).  This pain can take your breath away for a minute.

Anyone have anything similar happen or have any thoughts to whats going on?  I thought at first that I had slept wrong or something, but now its 4 days later and it is not getting any better.  I have a job where I am up and down all day, and this pain is the killing me.

I have tried my pain meds, muscle relaxants, ice and heat packs.  Nothing helps except for staying off my feet.  Any help/thoughts greatly appreciated.

Nanners, I am so sorry you are hurting. I had lots of hip pain before my fibro medicine and I know how you feel. I could barely move sometimes. I wonder if the Pred can aggravate fibro? Or the other arthritis you possibly have? I would tell your rheumy.

Hopefully the others have some more ideas. I would take the muscle relaxer every night. My Fibro only got better gradually when i began the muscle relaxers.

good luck!
Karen

Thanks Karen for your response. I have been doing the muscle relaxers, but I don't think this is muscle, I am thinking something going on with the bones. Eeek!

I developed osteopenia of my left femur head after a few months of prednisone use at age 19 and I have pain in my hip a lot. It's right in the joint and I get a shooting pain when I stand up and an aching pain when I'm walking, mostly when the left leg is back so I have to walk with a limp in order for it not to hurt. Sometimes it only lasts a short period of time, others (like today) it lasts all day or longer.

Every time I'm on prednisone, my joints usually start hurting right away and it switches- back, hips, ankles, fingers, toes, knees. It's ridiculous.

I would bring it up to your doc and request a bone density scan- if anything just to get a baseline to see if you have bone loss over time from the Crohn's/prednisone.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar region of the spine from long term prednisone use.

Currently unmedicated and flaring :(
Waiting for my appointment with the new GI on July 18th. Insurance finally kicked in, hooray!

Hey Nanners...Sorry you're not feeling well.  My guess is the course of predinose has aggrevated the Fibro.  I'm right there with you on the hip pain, it's horrible!  The only thing I have found that has helped me is the Ultracet, tub baths (which is almost impossible to get out of) and gentle stretches on my good days.  I believe you told me your stomach couldn't take the Ultracet though.  Is this hip pain on the same side as your knee surgery?  If so, you might also want to mention this to your ortho surgeon as well as the rheumy.  Either way, I think you need to be seen just to make sure everything is okay and I agree that if you haven't had a baseline bone density...you need one.  Thank God I thought to have this done prior to all that prednisone!

Hope life finds you on the sunny side real soon!

Hi Gail,

Ummmmm . . . did you feel better while on the pred and were you more active? Pred can give pain relief and energy which can lead to overdoing a bit. I'm wondering if you have a pinched nerve in your lower back. This could cause a shooting pain down your hip even toward the knee or farther down.

I have this problem and it really is very painful. It can feel like a hot knife, electricity, or just plain achy in the hip. I hope it resolves in short order . . . but I would report it to your prescribing doctor to make sure and see what he/she suggests.

Blessings!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I have had a bone density test already and know that I have osteopenia. This is the same hip as the knee I had surgery on. I didn't overdo anything, just woke up last Sat with it. I have a knot right in the area where it hurts. If I push on this knot it really hurts. As I stated earlier I have tried heat/cold with no relief. I am taking Percoset and using muscle relaxants with no relief from either. If it doesn't get better soon I think I am going to have to contact the Rheumy and see if I can get some xrays or a MRI to see whats going on. I know its not Sciatica as the pain doesn't go down my leg (had that before). I have complained forever to the Rheumy about my hips, but she keeps thinking its inflammatory. I just finished the Pred so I know its not that now. Oh well, I hope it goes away soon.
