I have some questions for everybody who has taken either Imuran or 6MP.

I started imuran a few months ago.  I weigh about 145 pounds so we figured my target dose would be about 150mgs/day.  I wanted to ramp up slowly, so I started at 50mgs for the first several weeks.

I had no problems, no side effects, and my blood work was always normal, so after a few weeks I went to 100mgs/day.

Soon after that, I started getting nauseous, not enough that I was vomiting, but enough that it was very difficult to eat and I was feeling *worse*, not better, than before.  My blood tests were still good.

I tried taking it in the morning, at night, split dose morning/night, with food, etc, and nothing seemed to help.

I backed down to 50mgs and within a few days felt better again.  So I tried to ramp up even slower.  I went up to 75mgs for six weeks, and had a small amount of nausea, but it was mild and tolerable.  After six weeks, I started 100mgs and within a couple of days, I was very nauseous and unable to eat again.

So, my question:  It seems I can't tolerate Imuran because of nausea, even though my blood work was good.  Any other tricks to help with the nausea before I give up on Imuran for good?  Or, has anybody not been able to tolerate Imuran because of nausea, but then tried 6MP and been able to tolerate it better?  Or, vice versa, been able to tolerate imuran but not 6MP?

I'm thinking of trying 6MP next.

Thanks for any experiences you can share.

Hi beave-

I had the same problem as you when I started Imuran. I started developing nausea at about 100mg/day. Unfortunetly, I have a very sensative tummy and it did cause me to be physically ill. It lasted 2-3 months and I basically just had to suck it up. I've been on it at 150mg/day for 6 months now and it is much better. Other things still make me nauseated, but the imuran has finally started leaving me alone. Have you tried nausea medication like promethazine? It helps a lot of people. truthfully, it didn't do much for me but most nausea meds don't. Of everything I've ever tried it was a suppository that helped me the most. Sorry I can't help much, but I know what you're going through. to me, nausea is the worst side effect there is. I am totally disfunctional when I have it. I didn't know if I was going to be able to stay on the Imuran, but I managed to get through. I hope you can too! Good luck!!

I haven't been on Imuran (yet) but I was on 6mp for almost 2 years. The only side effect I had on 6mp was joint stiffness. Otherwise I
had no problems with it and actually loved it because it put me in remission. I keep begging my GI to let me go back on it now
but the joint thing is keeping him from letting me go on. I do want to try the Imuran though. I'm hoping maybe it will work just
as good for me as th 6mp but without the joint stiffness. That would be awesome!!!
