Has anyone out there tried this? I know "Writer" has and has given me some good info!! Hopefully you will chime in again.

Ive read study after study that concludes an elemental diet is just as effective, if not more effective than steroids in crohns patients. I could drink food for the rest of my life!!!!

Ive been drinking Ensure Plus for 4 days straight now and Im feeling great. I usually get blood sugar swings with normal solids and Ive noticed with these shakes I really dont get the urge to eat but I know I need to get some nutrition in my body. LDN has enabled me to wean to 10mg of PRED and decreased my bm's from 6-8 to 1-2 FORMED stools a day, even on a liquid diet. weird.... My goal with the liquid diet is to wean the last 10mg of pred!

Im waiting on insurance to help me pay for Vivoxen http://www.nestle-nutrition.com/Products/Product.aspx?ProductId=7a542e35-c876-454b-b0a1-b3e8895bcb64 Its $350 for 36 servings, 300 calories per serving.

Sooooooo for a 2000 cal/day  diet  @ 300cal a packet @7 packets a day @ $9.70 per packet = $70 per DAY!!!! or $12,000 for 6 months... Is my math correct?

Ensure shakes are about $7 per day for 2100 calories.

Is the elemental formula worth the $70 day?
Will elemental foods work every other meal with Ensure in between?

I want to know more about this!!

Writer: can you give a breif summary of - Semi-elemental vs elemental vs polymeric vs Ensure shakes.

Just put a Gastric  tube in me! Id rather never eat again than deal with chronic pain, another perfed bowel, resecton, near death, colostomy in the future, etc.

I hear ya Redspot. I was at a CCFA conference and heard the same great things about these diets. The doctor there didn't seem to make a big deal about the difference btwn Boosts/Ensures and the Rx drinks. She even said that just adding the drinks with regular foods seems to help some. She said the biggest problem is compliance. If you can stick with it, these diets seem to really work and sound better than pred to me.
Currently in remission!

Good luck getting insurance to pay for food! Most insurers won't cover dietary supplements or food. Let us know if you succeed.

I think I was tube fed this stuff for six weeks in hospital years ago (1993). I'm pretty sure that was the name. I was going to the bathroom up to 18 times a day on it -- but that's probably because a fistula had developed between my ti and sigmoid (which wasn't discovered until they had me open in the OR) But every time they tried to reintroduce food I obstructed so in the end I had a resection and never had the option of an elemental diet offered again.

I'm going on a Yoga retreat next week and it's a vegetarian environment with a heavy emphasis on Indian cuisine -- which would kill me. I rely on meat protein for a big part of my calories. I have stocked up on Ensure and will use the week to go on a liquid diet. I'm looking forward to giving my bowels a rest. I haven't been feeling so well lately -- coming off medication because of elevated liver enzymes and just taking too many chances with my diet. (gotta love strawberry season!

It's hard to argue with success. If you doing well on Ensure Plus, then I'd just stick with it. It's a polymeric formula (meaning that it contains whole protein). Vivonex is elemental (containing amino acids), and semi-elemental formulas contain either peptides or a mixture of peptides and amino acids. Early on, people expected that the elemental formulas would be most effective, but in head-to-head studies, the different types of formulas seem to work about the same, although some people will respond to one type and not another. I would not alternate formulas on a daily basis; I'd choose one that works and stick with it. If your bloodwork looks good with Ensure and you can get off steroids, maybe the insurance company will pay for that instead of Vivonex - it would certainly be cheaper. The latter is pricey, although certainly cheaper for them than paying for surgery or a biologic drug.

Once you are in full remission, and off steroids, as Inflamed mentioned you can try getting some of your calories from Ensure and the rest from regular food. For some people, that can help maintain remission; others find that they relapse unless they are on the formula exclusively.

excuse the little sidebar, but have fun on the yoga retreat, bell. I am jealous! yp
49 y/o woman.  Diagnosed 4/06 after colonscopy, SBFT, CT-scan all showed crohns. 3 months later, after pred and remicade, all tests showed no crohns. December '06 had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy. Now taking Glycolax, Ultra Fiber Plus, Florastor, and DHEA. Have become gluten-free diet per naturopath's tests.

Right On!!

I just found Walmart brand shakes. EXACTLY the same as Ensure. I would bet they are made by the same folks (ROSS)

less than $6 a six pack. Thats 2100 calories. I did two for breakfast, two for lunch, and had some fish and rice for dinner. Feeling good.....

Im down to 14mg of PRED and my knees are killing me. My stomach fine though. Im going to hold here for 3 days then wean 2.5mg. Ill take it SLOW from there.

Is Ibprofen okay to take short term with CD? I cant take any Narcs due to the LDN. I woke up last night with severe knee pain. Im sure the few hours the LDN is blocking the receptor sites dosent help!
