Hi all,
Just a couple of Q's. I have had Crohn's Disease for a couple of years now. Started on Prednisone (UGH!) and have been on azathioprine (150mg) for approx 2 years now. I mostly feel 'ok' compared to when i was diagnosed. Can't eat lots of foods (beans, spicy food, fried food, alcohol etc etc blah blah), occasional diarrhea and stomach pains most days (nothing too bad though), is this considered "in remission"??
Secondly, hubby and I want to have kids in a few years, I am wondering what the complications with that is going to be??

Any info please let me know!
Thanks again :)

Hi, i have Cronh's for 19 years, i had remision for 2 years, which myself decided not to take any medication. The worst happened, i ended up having a surgery in 2001, but the disease resturned as usual. I am doing fine now, i do not have diarrhea, but started having some problems with contipation which i am not sure what is. You really have to consider how severe is your disease and bear in mind Crohn's can return any time. Now i am trying a wheat and gluten free diet to see if change anything. I want to conceive as well, but i will take my medications, because a healthy mother is more likely to have a healthy baby. Many people here had healthy babies while in medictions such as imuran and remicade. Good lucky!!!

I would not consider where you are at now "in remission".

I am currently 32 weeks pregnant with my second child and started out at what I would consider "remission". I had a bowel resection in July 07 and since then have been able to eat pretty much whatever I wanted, have no pain and limited amounts of "d". At the advice of my GI and my OB/GYN, we waited to try to conceive until I was pretty much symptom free. Pregnancy can cause issues for Crohn's so having the littlest amount of things to deal with, the better. My first child was born before I was dx'd and the pregnancy was horrible!! I had an awful flare that lasted the entire time and was very sick! I was in and out of the hospital for 7 months. My husband and I decided the best option for this pregnancy was to stay on remicade and keep my crohn's under control to have the best chance at a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby.

I would talk to both your GI and your OB/GYN before you TTC and get everything under control so that a flare is less likely to casue problems during pregnancy. GOODLUCK!!

Currently on Remicade/8 weeks

I had my son 2 years ago in remisson. But I have a very very very mild case of Crohn's. I can pretty much be drug free with just here and there having to take Cipro for a few weeks and being fine again.
I felt my best when I was pregnant. My first big flare was 8 years ago when I found out I had CD. I have been good up until this past May.
I choose to be off meds when I got pregnant but that worked for me.
When I'm in remission I am like a normal person and can pretty much eat anything within reason of course.
Everyone is different with this disease and everyone reacts different to meds of course. I had a little flare a few months after my son was born but nothing I couldn't get back under control quickly.
Living with Crohn's Disease since Jan./2000 but had a few years prior
I'm a true Crohnie with IBS too

Meds I have tried:  Too many to list- LOL
Meds currently on:  Prednisone 20mg tapering  Back up to 30mg  :-(
Methotrexate injections once a week 25mg
Folic Acid 5mg once a week
                           Wellbutrin
No Surgeries

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and am on prednisone and heart med. I went off imuran when I found out I was pregnant. I don't even know how much it was helping me because i was still sick with CD every day.

The biggest thing I find that helps while pregnant (and in general) is to watch what you eat: no sugar, limited or no processed foods, sourdough bread (easier to tolerate), nothing that can cause obstruction like steak.

I mostly eat a very natural homecooked diet and along with probiotics, it probably does the most for my crohns. Chicken, fish, well cooked veggies, fruits, honey-sweetened homemade goods, etc. When I stray from this sort of diet, I feel worse.

Most doctors say that if you get pregnant and are in remission, you will likely stay in remission while pregnant, but you might consider adjusting your meds to the most safest for the baby. My GI and other docs have told me that prednisone is the safest drug to use for CD while pregnant.

Best wishes!
