Sometimes I feel like I just can't work anymore.  I push myself every day.  I call off at least once a week.  I'm so tired.  I feel like I just can't do this anymore.  Has anyone ever applied for Social Security Disability?  Is it a difficult process?  I WANT to work.  But I am exhausted.  Two years of fighting Crohn's.  I'm tired....  Julie

Hi Julie -

There are people on this board who have disability. I have fairly mild crohns that is more or less under control so I have never tried for it. I think if you need it, go for it!! However, warning bells go off from your post because your chief complaint seems to be fatigue. Do you mean tired of the disease or that you are literally tired? Obviously you have tried a lot of meds and are doing everything possible to get the crohns under control. But, is it possible that you are anemic, have low B12, or even depression or some under lying reason making it hard for you to get to work? Calling out once/week seems like a lot! Could you reduce your hours instead? While I hope that you are able to get disability I hope even more that you find the reason for your extreme fatigue and get back to living your life!!
26 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, I have fatigue, but when I say tired, I mean "tired" of dealing/fighting with this disease. Tired of being sick all of the time. Blessings, Julie

I have to agree with Fitzy here. You may be eligible for a temporary disability, but you have to be pretty sick to get the Social Security disability. Have you have your B12 tested lately? Many Crohnies have problems absorbing B12, so that might be something you need to get checked.

I am really tired and sick of being sick too. But I still make it to work and even have days when I have to call out. But even after 33 years with this DD I still don't think I am eligible for disability yet. Hope your docs can find something to get you feeling better.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

Thanks to you all for the replies. I guess I just needed to vent.

Kasper87, good luck with your disability!

Nanners, my B-12 is fine. I get the injections.... I'm so sorry you have been suffering with Crohn's for 33 years. It's people like you who make me want to keep going, pick myself up, dust myself off, and stop feeling sorry for myself!

I think I'm having a pity-party today.....

Blessings, Julie

Pity Parties allowed Julie!!! I have them too. I fight all the time between deciding to try for disability and my desire to stay in the workplace. I am sure one day my Crohns will win, but I am not quite there yet.

This disease sucks. I feel so much for the young mothers out there. I was blessed to be pretty healthy during my girls growing up years, but I sure am making up for lost time now:) But I am blessed with a wonderful husband now and that makes up for all my health problems.

Hope you get feeling better.

God Bless,
Gail *Nanners*

I'm on disability, but not for crohns. I just had a little advice in case you do decide to apply. Make sure you make copies of everything! You will have tons of forms to fill out...many have the same questions on them...it gets very tiring. Good records help so much.
