I went to a naturopath a couple weeks ago and he felt that I may have low stomach acid (bloating, undigested food in stools, iron deficient, low muscle tone).  He told me to take betaine. He said eventually the betaine will cause my stomach to produce more acid on its own.   Has anyone else tried this?

thanks!

So he diagnosed this condition based on symptoms alone? Some of the symptoms you mentioned are also symptoms of Crohn's disease. Bloating and passing undigested food in the stool are symptoms of poor digestion and absorption in the small intestine. Do you have CD in the small bowel or teminal ileum? Was your iron deficiency determined by blood test? I guess what I am trying to say is that before I accepted the naturopath's diagnosis i would want confirmation that my problem is low stomach acid versus active Crohn's. There is a test to determine if one has stomach acid problems. Here's a link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003883.htm

The University of Maryland has some good information on Betaine. I noticed that they recommend it be taken with folic acid, B6, and B12. http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/betaine-000287.htm

Thanks for the info and links. I am recovering from a flare, but the bloating and being underweight I have even in 'remission'. Seems even when my gut has felt great and I have no symptoms I never gain weight. I had a SBFT last month which, according to my GI was completely normal except for some possible nodluation at the ileum. I also had a gastroscopy last month which was also completely normal.

My ferratin was 3 and my hemoglobin was 94, but I had a blood transfusion and an iron infusion and my ferratin is now 116 with a hemoglobin of 114.

Apparently when most people take 6grams of betaine they should feel some warmth or discomfort in their stomach, yet when I take it I feel nothing.
