I just had something happen that has made me a little scared.  The only time in my life that I have had blood in my stool was when I was first diagnosed 33 years ago (when I was going 5018 times a day).

Well I just got a bad "poop" cramp and went to use the BR.  I use stool softners daily, so that helps to keep things moving smoothly.  Well when I went just now there was RED blood all over my stool and some in the bowl.  I did not strain or push at all, the stool came out fine, I feel okay, but the blood has kinda stunned me, since its been so long since I have seen it.

Should I just watch and see if it happens again or see if any new symptoms develop?  I can say my joints are really hurting today, but I just figured it was a fibro day (burning pain).  What do you guys think?  Appreciate your thoughts.

I wish I could help. I've never had bleeding, but I know how scary a new symptom is. I just had white stuff for the first time. I'm gather that it was mucous. I did call my GI and was told that it is quite common and not to worry about it so I'm not.

Nanners, I would just let your doctor know even if it is to rest your mind.

OH Nooo is right. I've never had blood except when I was diagnosed either, but I started having some about 9 months ago. One doctor said it was active disease after I had my scheduled scope, (gave me some suppositories but didn't really expect them to do much, gee thanks!) and one said it was hemi's after my regular follow up appointment with him. So I guess my suggestion is to just watch it for the weekend and unless you start really having a LOT of blood, take a wait and see approach for the next couple of days. Why do these things always happen on the weekends?!? Hope it turns out to be an isolated event.

Thanks guys! Zanne figured you would have the same thing being as we are CD Twins. I am just going to try to be calm and see what happens. Hopefully it is just a freak occurence and everything will be okay. I am sitting here worrying about every little pain I am feeling though:(

Zanne was yours just a isolated event or did it happen more than once? Did it just happen out of the blue like that for you too? I am wondering if it is connected to that little flare I had a month ago. You know the one where I medicated myself with a 10 course of Pred??!! I haven't had any more problems since then, except this.

Okay, going to try and not worry!!!

hi
i was told that as long as the blood was fresh looking ie. bright red and not browny or black blood then normally its ok. But you should always consult with your doc, to be on the safe side, but in my humble opinion of bleeding for years that is what the docs have always told me. Hope it has helped to calm you a wee bit.
extreme constipation from birth
fainting spells aged 15, then diagnosed I.B.S
anal fissures, haemorrhoids internal and external
mucous and bleeding
sigmoidoscopies, endoscpies, scans, x-rays, bloods
h-pylori aged 24-26
more tests, diagnosed severe slow transit, marker tests took 3-4 weeks to come away
large colon removed in 2007, aged 27( surgeon said removed 10ft) no colostomy
still in severe pain, awaiting dietician appt, now lots of food intoleraces

For me its off and on and seems to be something that I'm getting more used to. I was really freaked out by it at first but since it seems to come and go and there really isn't any rhyme or reason connecting it to how I'm feeling, I'm going to go with the theory that its a hemi. I do think that us "old timers" tend to take a more laid back approach having been there done that for so many years. If this were someone who was just DX, I think we both would be telling them to get on the phone and make the call!

Yeah I am just hoping its from an internal hemmie. It was bright red blood, but what was weird, I didn't strain at all. I'll just keep an eye on things. Of course, it has to happen on a Friday. Geesh!

Bright red blood coating the stool is usually from internal hemmies. My Gi once told me that the key things about blood in the stool are, the darker or mroe clotted the blood, the higher up its origin (and vice versa) and the more the blood is mixed in with the stool, as opposed to being on it, the more concerned you should be. I'm assumnig you have had a scope in the past year or two . . . if so, I'd bet on ingternal hemmies as a benign cause. Maybe watch for a week and see if there is a recurrence and call the GI if there is.

Nanners, I had the bright red blood from the internal hemmies and I did not have to strain to bleed. it usually happened when I had the D.... it seemed to happen in spurts and I have had a while since it has happened.

I think you are probably ok but some hemmie cream might not hurt. the internal ones kind of peek out a bit for me so the cream helps make them shrink a little.

Thanks Karendee! No rectal pain at all, so I don't think they are going to be a problem. I have a little nagging cramp in the lower right side, hopefully its nothing. But thanks for thinking of me.

I never thought of internal hemmies, so will mention this to Gastro. Thanks for posting this Nanners, hope this goes away for you soon. Jo

Could it be that you ate something that could have irritated you? Like preserves with seeds? Seedless grapes (which aren't always seedless), something breaded that had a courser grain to it? I'm with every one else, wait & see if it turns dark or grainy, stick with liquids for the next couple of days and just to be safe, give the GI (I just thought I'd mention it to you) phone call. A little bit of blood looks like a whole lot more when it hits the water too. Keep us updated!

Want to tell you guys, don't think it's just okay because it's bright red. You could be bleeding from way up in, but if it comes out FAST it won't have time to turn dark. That's what happened to me. I was bleeding from my TI, and it was BRIGHT RED! At first I thought I was fine, because I've also been told red meant hemmies. But then it kept coming, and lots and lots of it.

So now I pay attention to how much blood I'm getting, not just the color. Hoping it was just a cut or hemmie for you Nanners!

hi Nanners... I've had this happen to me just recently. I bled bright red blood for 2 solid days... must of went to the washroom about 20 time each day, and each time it was blood. At first it was mixed in with poop but then it got to be just blood. Saw my Dr. who sent me to my GI PDQ. HE did a sigmoid... nothing.. an endoscopy ... samo, samo.. scarring but no fresh trouble spots... colonoscopy... nothing! So, he basically said he didn't know where the blood had come from. It had stopped after 2 days and the only other time I 'd had blood like that was 20 years earlier in university. He did say that sometimes. you can get a bacteria that will make you bleed like that and then it just resolves itself. My iron was low. so he know i had lost quite a bit. ... but still can't tell me from where....
Do go to the Er if it happens again.... maybe if they see it when it is happening , they can figure it out better than when you see them 2 weeks later etc...
Good luck dear Nan... keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Mary

Nanners, hopefully it is nothing to worry about. I get the same thing occasionally. Bright red blood on the stool or in the toilet. Mine is from hemorrhoids. My GI said there is no cause for concern. He told me that if I see blood every time, or if it is dark in color/clotty, to call him. I hope this helps!

Yeah I am pretty sure it was an internal hemmie. Haven't had any more blood and have actually been a little slower bowel wise and have had harder stools that I did that day and no more blood. I am anemic, hence the concern about blood. I ate Lasagna at a baby shower which really is something I should stay away from because the sauce usually upsets me. And before anyone says maybe the blood was the sauce, no it was 100% sure blood.

I see my GI in a couple of weeks and will bring it to his attention. Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts.

It certainly sounds like it was internal hemmies. Good luck with your appointment! Blessings, Julie
