Hi All,

so the docs want to start me on Remicade as a buffer until the 6MP kicks in, which they want to start me on as well. Currently on Lialda & entocort which dont seem to be getting rid of my inflammation (poos are still not right & i still have occasional tummy cramps)
Any one else totally freaked about all the drugs & possible long term affects
I am only 29 so i still have a lot of life ahead of me!
I am a runner (1/2 marathons, was hoping to do my first full this year but my docs ruined that dream for me), what if all these drugs make me too tired to run long distances or my joints become irritated so i cant run. Running is one of the few things that makes feel good these days (mostly mentally, i think it would be pretty tough if i had to deal with not being physically capable of running)
I live in NYC & all these drugs mess with your immune u have any idea how many germs are on the subway at rush hour???? there is no avoiding them!!! Will i just be sick all the time, ie, with the common cold or something similar???

I have been a little bit of denial trying to convince myself i dont really need all these drugs. Reading all the stuff about controlling your disease with diet only feed into my denial!!

Just wanted to put my fears out there - anyone have experiences with these drugs that may help me feel better or worse???

Well if your symptoms are not debilitating you might opt to just allow the 6mp to take effect -- usually it reaches therapuetic levels in about 60-90 days. That would let you hold off on Remicade until and unless you need it down the road. Most people tolerate 6mp pretty well and achieve long term remissions with it. I'd personally be hesitant about starting one of the big-gun biologics until I knew that the 6mp was not going to do the job. As for diet control, I am one of those who is skeptical. I really doubt it is effective for more than a small percentage of patients with minimal disease.

Hmmm..... interesting!  A GI that is going to start you on 6MP and in the interval of therapeutic level use Remicade?  I've never actually heard of such a thing.  I would have some serious issue with that logic! First, there are some new studies out there that suggest using 6MP and/or Imuran in conjunction with Remicade may not be as good of an idea as originally thought.  More docs are going to a Methotrexate - Remicade combo if the use of two drugs is necessary.    Further more, Biologics are great at getting patients off of steroids and onto ONE drug.  I'm not a fan of the mixing..... unless you HAVE too, and some do.  Also, Remicade is not a good drug to start and stop.... you tend to build up antibodies and then could be unable to use it later down the road.

When looking at medications, you have to think risk - benefit.  The side effects can be scary, but for most the benefit out weights the risk.

I've had Crohn's for 9 years and do 2- 1/2 marathons a year!  You can still do it!  You should check out  This would be a great program for you and give you the opportunity to meet and train with other Crohn's patients.  I participated in ING Miami and am about to do Rock-n-Roll San Antonio with the CCFA Georgia team.  It has been one of the best experiences of my life!

My 2 cents! =o)  Best of luck to you!

I was on remicade AND imuran for 3 yrs. I am still on the remicade but had to stop the imuran because of liver issues. This Dec. will be 4 yrs. on remicade. Since I have started those drugs, I have been healthier than I have ever been. I have had only one cold, and have not gotten the stomach flu at all. I teach in 4 different schools, and have 2 school age kids, so I work and live in germs! I wouldn't be afraid to try them.

I too live in NYC (well I live in Queens and work in NYC) and have been taking 6mp and Remicade for a year and a half. I used to get sick (colds, bronchitis, throat infections) all the time before I started these drugs but now I rarely get sick and if I do it is just a mild cold.

Hi Petite - I am doing the NYRR 1/2 in queens in Sept - my consoliation for deferring the NYC marathon until next year!!
I have looked into Team Challenge & was considering waiting to do the napa valley one next year & making a little vaca out of it

as for everyone else - thanks for all the responses, I am of course now more confused then ever - i am def far from debilitating pain, more uncomfortable then anything, so i could prob ride it out & wait for the 6MP to kick in
I trust my doctors - the ones who recommended the new treatment work at the IBD center at Mt Sinai, so they do nothing but deal with this stuff all day. They do a lot of the clinical trials there as well (one advantage to living in NY - good doctors) - It is possible they are being more aggressive then necessary but i am pretty sure the goal is for me only to be on the remicade for a few months. I guess i just want to be reassured that i am making the right decision. If remicade can get me back to having a normal life quicker that would make me really happy
I dream of a day i can go out to dinner with friends have a couple of cocktails & not have to think about it!!!!

I am going to call my reg GI today or tomorrow to drill him for his thoughts - he originally wanted to just put me on the 6MP (yes i have a Chrons specialist & a GI) so im curious what his thoughts are on the new treatment plan

Thanks Again!
