So i'm on my 5th, going on 6th week of prednisone. I'm starting to get bad acne and moon face, but i don't care about any of that since i've been feeling SO much better intestinal wise. I have been noticing a serious cramp in my lower left calf.. like a charlie horse trying to kick in but wont fully cramp. Just kind of like an ache. Today, my right shin starting bugging me too. I tried to massage it out but all it did was bring the pain down to my foot. I'm new to Crohn's so i don't know if anyone else has gotten cramps from the meds or Crohn's. I do take birth control pills, so i'm more worried about a blood clot. I'm seeing my gastro doc tomorrow for a follow up since my diagnosis, so i'll ask him then. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem too, and how they deal with it.

Definitely mention these cramps to your doc. I get them something TERRIBLE. Sometimes the cramp in my calf will wake me up while I am sleeping and I will need my husband to pull my leg out. This usually happens when I have a lot of D and am probably dehydrated or need potassium. I also get terrible cramping and charlie horses in my feet. I use powerade and orange juice (sometimes watered down) to replace the fluids and potassium. If the cramp happens in my calf I try to stand on my feet and stretch it out. If I am able to get some exercise (walking is about it right now), the cramping seems to happen much less often ---but it's vicious circle with the D and weakness.

Much luck to you!

Ahhh ok I was wondering about the potassium thing. I haven't had my blood drawn since i was in the ER. I know back in June when i first started flaring, my potassium levels dropped pretty low from all the D on the blood work they did. Now i haven't had any bowel problems since i started prednisone 5-6 weeks ago but i'm wondering if i'm not getting enough potassium anyway. I'll check it out.

Oh, the infamous leg cramps. I hated them when I was on pred. Try eating some bananas. 1-2 bananas a day really helped me.

Bananas? Oh how I wish I could eat them! If i want them, they have to be cooked into bread, or something. It makes my mouth water to think of eating a banana!
