Hello all,

After a year of blood in or with my stool and terrible stomach cramps, diarrhea, rashes and some truly impressive abdominal bloating I got my sorry self to a doctor for further investigation. I was ordered a sigmoidoscopy (ouch!) and this is what the biopsy results were. They are rather unclear and if anyone can decipher what the doc is saying it would be appreciated!! I have been put on uc/chrons meds. Here`s what he said:

COLITIS- NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED- AS FAR AS SECTION IS CONCERNED

MICROSCOPICALLY, ALL BIOPSIES SHOW EROSIVE CHANGES WITH A MODERATE CHRONIC INFLAMMATION REACTION, NON-SPECIFIC, IN THE COLONIC MUCOSA. THERE IS NEITHER EVIDENCE OF MALIGNANCY, NOR EVIDENCE OF SPECIFIC BOWEL DISEASES, INCLUDING ULCERATIVE COLITIS, IN SO FAR AS THE SECTION IS CONCERNED. A CAREFUL FOLLOW-UP AND TIMELY REBIOPSIES ARE RECOMMENDED.

Thanks for any translational help!!

It sounds like he/she only has a hunch but can't give anything specific from the biopsy results except that your colon is the primary area afflicted. Is there no way you can bring it back and have it explained?? Or call?

Yes, that`s what I got from it as well. Unfortunately, had all medical work done while living in Japan and there was a large language barrier that made it difficult to get clear answers verbally. Am now in home country so I`ll try again for some answers! Was taking Pentasa while in Japan, so was curious what was going on!! Thanks.

When you go in search of answers in your home country, my read of your report suggests to me you need a full colonoscopy with biopsies taken throughout. Are you in the US? If not, in your country do you have easy access to a gastroenterologist?

You have inflammation in your colon with erosion. Given that the biopsies were analyzed in a Japanese labratory and they are recommending timely follow-up, you need to seek that follow-up now you are home. Good luck and let us know how this goes for you!

Hello, thank you for the advice. Actually I am Canadian but am married to a French man and have just moved to Paris. I am in the midst of searching for a Gastro doctor here that speaks English and will keep looking. Will give an update once I find one. Thanks again.

I also think you need a full workup, as the findings are suggesting that you have inflammatory bowel findings, but they can't distinguish between CD or UD. I think you need some follow-up tests like a full colonoscopy and small-bowel follow-through.

Wishing you the best and please keep us updated,

The fact that ALL biopsies showed erosive changes makes Crohn's unlikely. If they have ruled out UC, that means something like Celiac or something that I don't know. More follow up is plainly needed.
