Lately I have been experiencing a decrease in bowel movements (going every other day, and just a little bit.)  The stools are also narrow because of a stricture, which my GI is aware of.  (No surgical intervention needed yet.)  I'm so gosh darned bloated and uncomfortable.  I've asked my GI on several occasions what to do, and every visit he gives me a different answer, ie. increase fiber.  Next visit he says take Miralax.  Next visit he says use stool softeners. shakehead

What have you found best for bloating, constipation, and strictures?  Thank you so much!  Blessings, Julie :-)

Hi Julie,

I use stool softners. I take them everynight before bed. I like them because I know I will have at least one bm a day. If I don't take them and miss even a once a day bm I am in a world of hurt and I get really nauseous too. Hope that helps.

Good luck,

Nanners, thank you so much for the reply. Do you recommend any certain brand of stool softener?

Julie,

I have a stricture in my sigmoid colon and was put on a low fibre diet at the time they found it. I have a few bowel movements a day but usually only a little bit at a time and originally they were narrower. I think the prednisone may have helped that but it wasn't doing enough as far as the inflammation goes so stopped taking it. Am going to try methotrexate before possibly surgery. Seeing a Crohn's specialist and he also said "low" fibre diet. I get a 'feeling' on the left side of the abdomen at times but no other symptoms so the decision to take any medication or have surgery has not been an easy one.

Was on prednisone for three months but no medication for the last 11 months. Starting methotrexate in mid-September.

I found that drinking very hot liquids (herbal tea, decaf coffee etc) helps soften things up.

PS - When I had my stricture I was told LOW fiber - no raw fruits & veggies

Thank you so much for the continuing feedback. I've only had soups and plenty of fluids the past couple of days, because I'm having so much trouble going. I thought I'd give my system a rest from solids. I called my GI yesterday because I was becoming concerned about a blockage. He said because I have no pain and am able to pass gas, I probably don't have one. He told me low fiber, soft foods diet, and had me start Hydrocortisone retention enemas for inflammation. If no bowel movement today, I need to try a stool softener. Hopefully this will help. It's amazing how bloated I am considering I really haven't eaten. Blessings, Julie

Hi,

The only thing that my daughter has found to help her is stool softeners and Kristolose togather. One doesn't work without the other for her.

Julie I just use a over the counter stool softner. Its called Docusate Sodium, the brand name is Colace. But the generic works just as well and costs less. I also live on a low residue diet all the time. Hope that helps. Good luck!
