Hey Guys!

I just found out that I'm going to have to get my tonsils removed (bummer). I'm not sure if anybody remembers, but a while back I posted to see if anybody had problems with white balls in their throats. Well, mine have gotten so bad that my throat has become a breeding ground for bacteria (GROSS) and as a result my tonsils have to come out.

I was wondering if anybody has had their tonsils removed while being on Remicade? OR if anybody has had a major surgery while being on Remicade? If so, is there any danger mixing General Anesthesia with Remicade? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time after receiving my remicade infusion to get my tonsils taken out due to the general anesthesia?

Please help! My ENT is going to give my Gastro doc a call, but I'm not sure if my gastro doc will be ok with the surgery b/c he's in VA and I'm getting my surgery done in AZ.

Any input would be helpful! Thanx guys!

I have had general anesthesia several times when I have had abscesses drained. I have been on remicade for all of them with absolutely no problems. Good luck.

I had my resection surgery while taking remicade with no issues. I also had a laparoscopic surgery to check for female problems while on remicade. There were no complications due to the remicade as both went fine.

GOODLUCK!

Just chiming in with one more reassuring story - I too have had multiple abscess/fistula surgeries while on the Remicade. I never experienced any complications or prolonged healing times or ANYTHING due to the Remicade.

Just keep an eye on your throat and make sure that it's progressing/healing the way it's supposed to after surgery. You shouldn't have any problems, but it doesn't hurt to be extra vigilant when you're on an immunosupresant - I totally understand your fear. But honestly - I think many of us have been sliced and diced while on Remicade without any complications.

I don't know if you're one of the lucky ones that can eat icecream, but if you're like me and wouldn't touch icecream with a ten-foot pole - might I suggest the icey-wonderful products of the company "Rice Dream". They're available at the slightly more obscure stores, like Whole Foods has some, and my local health food store has oodles. You can get totally "normal" tasting ice cream made from rice milk, and let me tell ya - it ROCKS. Mint chocolate chip, chocolate chocolate, even nutty bar things. So, as your soar throat heals... if you need some ice cream...

Good luck with your surgery!

Thanx so much for your responses guys! It definitely makes me feel TONS better! TONS better! I saw the ENT today and am definitely getting my tonsils taken out w/in the next two weeks.

Patientspiders, I went to Whole Foods today and picked up the Rice Dream icecream. Mint chocolate chip is my absolute favorite icecream and I can't wait to try it tonight! I was also really happy to see that they had orange and vanilla too! Thanx for the recommendation!

Take care guys!!

Glad you found it, and I hope you enjoy! Don't be discouraged by one flavor if you don't like it though - they are all VERY different... more so than regular ice creams... sometimes the vanilla with chocolate syrup is just fabulous too. I DO so hope you like them. :-)
