I try to keep track of the times I do things that I would normally run away from, and do them without incident.  The last one I posted about was when I had to travel a couple hours each way with my boss.  Well today I got sworn in as a student attorney by a justice from our state's supreme court.  I had to be there at 7:55am.  EEK.  So I got up, pooped, poped two immodium and then a xanax.  I had to poop once more before it started but made it through without my anxiety getting out of control.

So, I was rx'd xanax for a severe flare of flying and have 10 or so pills left over.  I have been taking one or two on the rare occassion where I know I usually would feel panicky and have extra d.  Since I have been doing that, I have been controlling my D a lot better in those situations where it comes on because of my lack of bathroom access.

I realize that those pills I have left will only last so long and I will need to call my doc, tell her how I have been taken them, and ask if I could get a refill.  I haven't really been taking it more than 3 times per month.  I get a super racing heart from caffeine and if I have some accidently I will take a xanax to counter act it.  Again, this is my own prescribing from my fear of flying stash.

So, have your docs been good about giving a xanax script for such occassions? I really don't want to be put on an anti depressant or anything like that because I only need it on such rare occassions.

But as a student attorney I will have court appearances this semester and would like to take a low dose before them.  My dose is only .25 so not enough to make me loopy or anything.

My only concern was that when I got this for flying my doc made sure I wasn't driving at all that day.  But I feel like I can take such a low dose and drive fine, or just take it when I get there.

Others?

Oh my other success of the day.  I had an hour and a half meeting in a super crowded room where I ended up in the back with my exit blocked.  I had to get up once and have everyone let me out but I didn't let it bother me at all!

I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

Fitzy just tell your doctor that you suffer with anticipatory anxiety due to your Crohns. Explain about the trip you had to take with your boss or other anxious times. I really don't think you will have any problems. Many of us with Crohns have that "what if" anxiety. I wouldn't tell them about taking them when you have had too much caffiene, but I would share how they help you in those anxious times. Good luck!

Thanks Nanners. I knew you would respond. I also love that I typed "flare of flying" instead of "fear of flying". I guess it really is a flare from flying lol.

I called today to ask for xanax myself, and my doc gave it to me, no questions asked. I told them I needed it for my upcoming vacation, and that I didn't want to deal with the anxiety of where the next bathroom would be... I think that you should be able to get some without any trouble. I even got mine from GP and not my GI, which I thought would be the more difficult of the two to convince. It amazed me how easy it was to get, especially compared to how many troubles some of us have with getting "approved" for other meds! This one should be a walk in the park for ya.

First off, congratulations! I have taken Xanax for years for anxiety/panic attacks, so I just need to call for refills. It is a miracle drug for me. I would just call your MD and tell him the situation. Good luck to you! Blessings, Julie

I am glad that you have found something that works for you anxiety, I would just caution you to be aware of how highly addictive Xanax is. My father and sister both have IBD as well as sever anxiety (Apparently I got off lucky with only Crohns) My father has been taking Xanax for years and his does is up to 5mg a day. He will have to continue to take it for the rest of his life because coming down off of it is too dangerous to his IBD. It is a miracle drug, but just be cautious please!!

Linjade thanks for the warning. But for myself I only use them maybe 1-2 a month if that and at the lowest dose available, so I am not worried about the dependency problem. I think its safe to say that is probably about the same for Fitzy too.

I also thank you for the warning. I am aware of the dependency issues and that is why I would only use it when absolutely necessary, not on a daily basis.
