I am extremely irritable, thing is i have not had a flare for some time and for the most part feel pretty good.  I just went gluten free and am trying to give up sugar .  Maybe that has something to do with it, but man, i mean PMS has nothing on me.  My poor husband. i can see him thinking of ways to get out of the house, which makes me even meaner.
Help!  anybody?

Great job on your diet.  I've been trying to do that but I have no willpower and it's hard.

I feel the same way!  I think mine has to do with my new job and the stresses that I'm having with it.  I think in your case it's the sugar/diet thing.  I've heard it can do that.  Good thing is it won't last for long and hopefully you'll be back to "normal" soon!

Do you think that maybe your body is detoxing?   I have a friend who went off sugar and she had horrible headaches and mood swings for about a week.  She was able to get though it and I’m sure you can to.

How about sugar substitutes—do they trigger Crohn’s symptoms?

Yes, certain sugar substitutes can make some symptoms worse.

Beware of sugar alcohols especially, things that end in "tol" like sorbitol, xyitol, malitol ect...but honestly any sugar substitues (man-made) can cause issues with exacerbating IBD symptoms so what I use is either Stevia (google it for more info) and honey.

oldcronny :)

I'm willing to bet it's detoxification that you're experiancing as well, but I strongly urge you to stick with cutting refined/processed sugars out of your diet, your mood will definitely improve along with EVERYTHING eles....I found it well worth it and I cut out all processed foods and fast-foods as well since they are also known to exacerbate symptoms *MSG's can be a killer on our symptoms*...and I have to say, food tastes so much better since I altered my diet and my symptoms have also improved as a result.

I admire you for getting those out of your diet. I've been wanting to but that would mean not eating anything.

And yes, I do feel irritable. A lot. But I think mine has to do with the medicine I am taking. I feel terrible for my fiance...one moment I'm really happy and the next..the smallest thing triggers a long bad mood. This morning he was making eggs and asked me if I wanted some so of course I said yes, but then he asked if he could make his first because he was putting cheese and a lot of butter in them and didn't want to make me ill. So, I got upset because I didn't want to wait(I didn't say that out loud...) and went to sulk on the couch. Just things like that...

I'm sorry any of us have to feel this way...it's good practice for gaining control over your emotions though I think. At least that is me finding the bright side in such irritability.

Thanks everyone! i am in a better mood now. Lets hope it lasts.
i will continue to do without the sugar and hope that it passes soon, if that is what it is. I hate feeling this way. I know i am being horrible at the time but can't seem to stop myself. then the guilt sets in and i feel awful about that. Anyway, glad to know you understand, and it does feel better to share with people who don't judge. thanks.

I wish I could blame it on sugar withdrawals!!!! Yes, I get very crabby. Especially when I start to flair and even when I am not. I have cut way back on my sugar and "bad" carbs lately but I don't believe it's enough to be the cause.
~Never officially diagnosed~
Appendectomy in 2001. Appendix perforated & gangrenous. Had pain off and on for 3 years prior. This is where all my trouble started.
Hospitalized in August 2005 with a bowel obstruction.
Colonoscopy showed definite colitis, SBFT showed narrowing of the Ileum and a possible fistula.
Both tests came back as consistent with CD.
2nd bowel obstruction February 2008. Got through it at home.
Currently not on CD meds. Following a low~residue diet and taking fish oil daily and Align probiotics daily.
