The other day when I had a BM I noticed that one spot was black, maybe about the size of a nickel.  Then yesterday, everything was normal, and this morning when I went there was another spot about the size of a nickel.  I didn't think too much of it the first time, but now it happened again...so of course I'm thinking about it more.

I am in no pain, so I guess my question is, should I think it's blood or just something I happened to eat.  Anyone know what types of things might cause black in stools?

I am seeing my GI tomorrow, so of course I will ask him, but just thought I would try to get some thoughts before then!

Thanks!!
Mel

Hi mel-

Passing blood is my symptom that I'm starting a flare.  I very rarely have diarrhea.  It's so common for me that my GI doesn't even flinch when I tell her.  We both just know that is very common for me, that I'm probably beginning a flare and start the process of trying to stop it before it gets out of hand.

I very rarely have pain when it first begins.  But that doesn't mean that later down the road that I won't be in major pain.  Sometimes I have awful pain and no blood.  Just remember everyone's different.  Hope that helped!

no, not necessarily. sometimes i'd bleed profusely and have no pain. other times it was like trying to expel a cactus. definitely let your GI know. it is something to monitor. for me, some times it went away after a day or two but other times it could last weeks. might be a good idea to look into suppositories, enemas or foams as that can put medicine right on the area.

Could you have eaten anything like blueberries or anything like that? That could cause dark spots like that too. Best to run it by the doc though. Good luck!

I second the blueberries comment. I ate a whole bunch of blueberries and didn't think about it until I went to the bathroom and my bm was completely black. I almost had a stroke...then i remembered the berries! If you google "black stools" they had a pretty good list of what foods can cause them...that is, if it's food-related. Hope you aren't flaring:(
Pentasa- 1000mg/2x 1/08; Percocet
Remicade 1st infusion 7/24/08
Ultram ER 200mg; Prilosec 40mg; Xanax-ANXIETY; Cymbalta 60mg
Entocort 9mg
Probiotic
Ferrous Sulfate 325mg/daily for anemia
Azathioprine 150mg
Currently on a Low-residue diet as of 11/26

I'm so tired, when will this get better?

Thanks for the replies.  I'm not going to worry cuz we all know how that helps! :-)  And especially since I'm going to the doc tomorrow anyway to follow up my ER visit 2 weeks ago!  The only thing different I ate in the last few days was potato soup, which some of the pieces had some skins and yesterday I had beef barley soup...so who knows.  I will watch and see and tell my GI tomorrow!

I had a major bleed, and no pain. Other then maybe some of your typical D cramping. But that was when there was a LOT of blood. I've had minor bleeding where there was no pain at all.
