Dear friends,

My hubby had Radical Prostatectomy 3 weeks ago today and of course that has kicked in his Crohn's.

He has been weak, dizzy and fatigued for last 3 days.  Having one normal stool first thing in the morning and then diarrhea. He is steadily loosing weight and lost 2 pounds in one day.  No fever.  Normally he takes no meds right now. He has history of 3 major surgeries and also we know he has a stricture.

Help me out...........what is best for the diarrhea and also what foods would be best for him.  He is also very depressed over this situation. cry

I have been spending much time at the hospital at my sister's bed side as she is slowly dying of Ovarian Cancer, now I need to be cloned.

I stayed home for 2 weeks with my hubby and thought we were on track, now this.

Need help..................please.

Hugs
Kitt

Kitt I would maybe put him on a liquid diet for awhile. Let him have some bowel rest. Maybe slowly work back up to "white foods" i.e. mashed potatoes, rice, jello etc. Immodium might help to slow the D down alittle, but I am not so sure that would be a good idea with a stricture. And as much as he might not like it, maybe its time for some Prednisone to quiet things down some. Usually once I realize I am flaring, I know to go right on the Prednisone and that usually stops my flares in their tracks. Hugs to you too, I am sure you are feeling pulled in every different direction.

God Bless,
Gail *Nanners*

If he is losing weight, possibly a high-calorie liquid food like Ensure Plus or Boost would be tolerated and help him keep his weight up? There are also high calorie puddings, ice cream, etc. that you may be able to purchase at a hospital or medical supply store. Enlive mentioned above comes as a boxed drink and I think has a couple hundred calories. Could the dizzines be from dehydration?

In terms of binding foods, I have heard of BRAT (Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). I don't know how well these work in the context of a flare. A liquid diet will help healing probably but won't stop the D in the short term.

Being so soon after surgery, he is already in a weakened state...Was he in the hospital, is it possible he contracted C. difficile? Did he take any antibiotics recently? Could he be anemic? I agree with the above post that you should probably contact a doc. Hope things improve soon.

Thank you so much for responding................I forgot the BRAT diet too.  I have him drinking plenty.  I will call the Doctors tomorrow if he has another crappie day.

I think he is so frightened of needing another surgery he is perhaps kicking into panic which does not help the fear factor.

I will check on those products.  We have the Ensure Plus and he uses that.

Again thank you to all from your yoyo friend.

Kitt
