I have yet another sinus infection that won't clear up. I have done 2 rounds of antibiotics and just saw an ENT today. She stuck a lovely camera up my nose and said it looked nasty and was still pretty bad. BUT rather than do another round of antibiotics she wants to boost my immune system up by increasing my prednisone (I am never going to get off this stuff!!!!!). She wants me to do some evil nasal cleansing thing 2X a day and use nasacort 2X day. If I'm not better in a month, come back and we'll talk about doing 4 - 6 weeks of antibiotics. I'm not sure I can stand another month of this sinus headache! I'm willing to listen to any ideas for ways to get rid/help in the infection/headache battle, so bring it on please

Oh and if none of her plans work, I'll be having sinus cleaning surgery, oh yeah.

See the thread "Antibiotics & Crohn's" from September 16th (a couple days ago).

As for the sinus rinsing (irrigation) that she wants you to do twice a day, do it.  Heck, do it SEVERAL times a day, not just twice.  I've been doing it three times a day minimum for the last four years.  Yeah, it feels really weird at first and is a bit gross, but it helps more than anything else I've done.  It might take a couple days to get used to doing it, but once you do, you'll find how helpful it is, and you'll look forward to doing it more and more -- like brushing your teeth or something.

I am so sorry that this is not getting better yet! Sinus headaches are awful! One time I hurt so bad I was tempted to get the drill from the garage and use it on my skull. Has anything worked at getting the gunk to drain? One of the things I do is get a pot of water boiling on the stove and create a steam tent using a towel. It can take a long time standing there but I have gotten it to loosen enough to get some of it out. Also. getting the bathroom really steamy when showering sometimes work. Have you tried warm compresses over the sinus area? I was also given saline nasal spray. Is this what you are to use to clean ith?

I hope her prescribed methods bring you quick and lasting relief!

Just finished round two of Biaxin, get to start round three-leviquin-today. Next stop ENT who will surely tell me much of the same.
Question? Boost your immune system by upping your prednisone?? Pred is yet another immune suppressent.

OK, the sinus rinse felt great for about a minute right after then the pain came back, so I will be keeping it up.

I've been using one of those microwave rice packs and it feels great, but hard to function with it over your eyes! and I have been trying steam too.

Prednisone seems to be the cure all for me, so I hope it works, but I doubt it will help in the next few days and this sinus headache is really getting old.

I will try the cider vinegar, but I'm not sure how I will get it down.

Thanks Keep Em coming!

levaquin gave me c-diff which tripped crohn's for me. I rarely get sinus infections since I started using a neti pot.

Zanne, try the Bragg's apple cider vinegar with "the mother". It's supposed to be one of the best out there, it's cheap and lasts like 3 years unrefrigerated. My regular grocery store carries it in the health food section, or you can find it in health food stores. Earthclinic.com says to put 2 teaspoons in a 16 oz glass of water and "sip all day to keep the body in a constant alkalized state", though you could start with the stronger mix jacenta gave. I was AMAZED at how quickly it helped clear out my plugged ear after my recent bronchitis/ear infection.

I'm going to continue this through the fall and winter, adding honey and hot water when it's cold out. Supposedly an alkalized state is healthier for our bodies. Disease, bad bacteria, etc., have trouble surviving in that environment. Yay! yeah

So glad the neti pot gave you a few moments of relief!!! Hope you feel lots better soon!

I agree with beave the nasal rinse is great once you know how to do it right. I had an awful sinus infection last week and It's gone now. I did the nasal rinse 3 to 4 times a day.

The nasal rinse can be improved on by adding xylitol to the rinse. A 5% solution of xylitol blocks the ability of many bacteria to stick to the sinus membrane, greatly improving the effectiveness of nasal rinses. Xylitol can be found at pharmacies or health food stores, but phone first to check. Add it to the saline rinse solution.

Zanne I swear to God I think we really are CD twins. Scary sometimes how much we are alike. I am healing now from a nasty sinus infection. After the round of antibiotics I was still feeling alot of congestion/pressure in my face. My PCP gave me a steroid nasal spray (Nasarel) sp? and it has really helped to relieve the congestion and pressure in my sinuses. Good luck and hope you get feeling better soon.

No idea what xylitol is, but I'll try to find it at the health food store. I also have an appointment for acupuncture this afternoon and usually that gives me a little relief, so hopefully that will help a bit. The ENT that I saw seemed very knowledgeable about crohn's and how much it can affect all the mucus membranes. Judging by the number of people who also have sinus issues, I'm guessing she was right.

Xylitol is a sugar - tastes sweet. It is used in some chewing gums and is reputed to reduce plaque if chewed more than 3 times a day because it prevents the bacteria from sticking to the teeth. One of the problems I had before diagnosis was pressure and discharge from the sinuses. I think now that it was due to the crohn's - another example of distant inflammation of the mucosa by the inflamed gut.

No swab. The ENT wants to avoid another round of antibiotics entirely. I just don't know if I can stand another few weeks of a sinus headache. I can take pain, I'm really used to it and can actually work with complete bowel obstructions. Thats how well I can handle pain, but a headache just puts me down. So I am looking for anything that can help.
