Hello All...
I have gotten a flu shot only once in my life and it was the year I was the sickest with the flu.  I know that the shot only covers certain strains, but I have avoided it since then.  I know that my PCP wants me to get a flu shot this year...she really wanted me to do it last year too since I'm a school teacher (however, that was before I was diagnosed with Crohns) Anyways...I digress.  My question is, is the flu shot a live virus?  (I assume it is, but I guess there are no dumb questions right?)  I only ask because I am now on entocort until December and I'm not sure if I can/should get the flu shot.  I will ask my PCP when I see her in a couple weeks, just wanted to feel out some answers first.
Thanks!  I appreciate it! smilewinkgrin

I have been on immuno-suppressives since dx in Nov 05 and have been denied a flu shot ever since. I never got them before. It has been recommended that my family get one though. My daughter was born nearly 3 months premature, and it was recommended that my husband and my mom (who is around me a lot) get a flu shot to keep me AND my daughter from getting ill.

I get the flu shot every year even while being on an immino-suppressive drug. The flu shot is not live and so it is okay to take, per my doctors. Sometimes the shot works and sometimes it does not. Last year it did not. I am a teacher too and I know how sick you can get around all those little ones.

I have gotten a flu shot every year at the insistence of my GI, rheumatologist and primary care doc. They feel it is especially important for people on immunosuppressants.

People on immunosuppressants should NOT get the nasal spray flu vaccines. Those are live virus. The shots are not live virus preparations

I'm on Remicade and can not get the flu shot. Those who worked near me couldn't get the flu shot either.

I think it depends on your individual circumstances. I know I get different advice every year - sometimes I'm allowed to have it, sometimes I'm not.

I got one last year, and plan to get one again this year. I think it is a good idea, even though it's frustrating when you hear them say it doesn't cover the flu going around the most. But I was pretty healthy last year. Actually I think it's because we started homeschooling last year. I was amazed at how many bugs came from his school. Homeschooling has really helped us to stay healthier, which is a plus. So I feel for those of you who are teachers, I can imagine how many bugs you come in contact with! Just germ factories!

shot not a live virus... ok to get... even on remicade.... does not give you influenza! every year we go through this debate... the best person to ask is your DR. even if they are a quack.

I get a flu shot every year. Our immune systems are so screwed up, that if I were not to get the flu shot, and I got the flu, I would be 10 times sicker than the average joe. Randynoguts is correct, the flu SHOT is not a live virus and you can't get the flu from the shot. The nasal spray is a live, but the SHOT is not. And all my docs want me getting the shot every year. In fact I was just asking when they will be available yesterday.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 32 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec 60 mg, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and doing tests to see if I have Inflammatory Arthritis or AS.

The shot is not a live virus, the one that you inhale is. My husband has lupus, I have CD and we always get the flu shot. We had to make sure that when my daughter was getting her shots as a child that she did not get any live viruses as they could make us sick. So long as it is not live, you should be fine.
