I know pred works really well for active inflamation, but how about for old scaring?

I was put on Prednisone for three months when they found a stricture in my colon and first diagnosed with Crohn's. I thought it was doing something as far as bowel movements went
but follow up colonoscopy still showed inflammation.
I thought they can't really tell how much is scar tissue and how much is inflammation? On last visit to GI he said that an ultrasound might tell more?

Im on 10mg of pred and having obstructions up high in the small bowel. I would HATE to increase my pred if its not going to help. Maybe Ill try a day or two of 20mg and see what happens??

They can indeed tell what is inflammation and what is scar tissue. I don't know how, but they can. When I had my SBFT doen my doctor told me I ahd alot of deep inflammation. My sed rate did nto show the inflammation, so I was virtually ignored everytiem I went in with a flare. If they don't see it, they don't want to treat it. So, I was vindicated.

Pred will not help a stricture. Pred is for inflammation. I have a stricture I've had for many years. It looks like it may be time to remove it. I find out tomorrow.

Nothing helps a stricture, with the exception of surgery. But eventually you'll get another one from scar tissue. The best you can do is to not eat stuff that causes inflammation. Inflammation can and will make the stricture worse.

Pred will help if there is inflammation at the stricture site. Sometimes relieving that will reduce symptoms and the problems from the scar tissue will be bearable. That has worked for me for years (and treating the inflammation prevents new scarring). If everything you feel is from the scarring though, no med will help.

The way my GI tells the difference btwn inflammation and scarring is to look at the area when there is no active inflammation-- all the narrowing that is left is scar tissue.

Hope you start feeling better.

That makes sense. The only inflammation I have is right at the stricture sight and think that it has been inflammed time and time again and healed as scar tissue before I was ever diagnosed or treated for Crohn's. Colorectal surgeon showed me on the sceen during scope and I thought I specifically asked if he could tell how much was scar tissue and how much was from inflammation as well as I have asked my GI in the past?
Redspot hope you find something that will work for you. Others probably know more but 10mg. of pred does not sound like much by itself but see you are on Humira as well and that is probably so that you can eventually get off the pred??
Stephanie, keep us informed.
