I am now starting week 7 of a sinus infection. And everyday justs gets a little bit worse. I can not believe that it is OK to let an infection simmer in a compromised immune system, but thats what I keep getting told. I've done 2 rounds of antibiotics that did nothing, then we tried sinus flushing and steriods, did nothing. So more antibiotics, but I had a reaction to that one, so now I am waiting for a new plan. Meanwhile, I'm running a fever, my teeth ache, I have a raging headache, my ears ache and are popping, my face is swollen and hurts. Its only the beginning October, what am I in for this winter when Flu and Cold season really hits!!!

And yes, I would like some cheese with my whine!

Zanne, may I join your party? I did ten days of biaxin, four days with nothing, ten more days of biaxin, three days with nothing then seven days of leviquin followed by three more days of leviquin-then I went in thinking I was finally clear and the doc told me I had an ear infection so I was given ten more days of leviquin of which I have four days remaining.
Just give me chocolate.

Join in, the more the merrier!!! I was given levaquin and biaxin, but reacted to both. The Z pack and avelox did nothing, so I'm hoping tomorrow to get something in the same family, but stronger. I think after 7 weeks, it just isn't going to go away by itself.

Hi Zanne,

I think it was Emom (thanks!) that mentioned on here EarthClinic.com and I have been addicted to it ever since, reading alot of interesting alternatives. What they recommend is Apple cider vinegar for sinus infections among alot of other aliments. I just cured a nasty yeast infection with it (that's another story!!!!) The stuff is amazing. My son had a canker sore in his mouth and I made him swish some in his mouth before school and afterschool it didn't bother him anymore.

Anyways, read up on this its worth a shot. Some recommend using a netti pot and ACV solution, others drink about 2 tbsp in a glass of water and they say the results are good.  Not too sure about you drinking the ACV but I did look up crohns disease on this site and some can tolerate the vinegar no problem, everyone is different as we know.

I just felt this was worth mentioning. I hope you feel some relief soon!

I have been using a neti pot and taking the cider vinegar, both for about 2 and a half weeks. The ENT doctor actually gave me the neti pot to use, and it may have been Emom or another poster who suggested the vinegar. But, I'm still getting worse, not better. I'm just tired of it. At this point, I really think I need some big gun antibiotics, much as I hate to do it, cause I know they will kill my CD. I was really hoping that some alternative treatments would work, but so far not so much. sad

Did they put you on flonase or any other rx nasal spray? Those help me. Also, are you seeing green and sure it is infection as opposed to allergy? I feel your pain. My freshmen year of college I had a 3 month sinus infection that referred to as "reoccurring" but if you ask me it was all one. They just kept giving me ammoxocillen and now I am immune to it. If you have to take the big guns could they give it to you via IV and maybe spare your guts a bit?

I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

One more allergy related point - I am really allergic to mold and it gives me classic sinus infection symptoms, even the green! It stumps the docs cause green usually means infection. Mine flares up after lots of rain and being in old buildings with leaks. I don't have a cure yet but half the battle is knowing the cause and trying to avoid it.

They did put me on a nasal spray, but I was already on one, they just changed it to one that didn't have alcohol in it so it isn't as drying. I don't have green. But the ENT stuck a camera up and said it looked nasty! Her words. She did finally call back today, but of course didn't read my message which was that I wasn't better and could she call my cell phone. So she called my house and said the CT looked good so she hoped I was feeling better, if not to call her back. But of course I didn't get the message until after the office closed, so I have to wait till tomorrow. shakehead

One other possible aid is xylitol. It a sugar that prevents bacteria from adhering to your sinus tissue. You should find it at health food stores and maybe drug store pharmacies. A 5% solution is how much to use. There is a commercial product called Xlear that is a ready-made solution, but you can just make your own. Since it is a sugar, it is not hard to take, but you might want to mix it into a saline nasal wash to avoid drying out the sinuses.

So after getting the royal run around from the ENT and playing phone tag for almost a week, she now says she doesn't think I ever had a sinus infection and had multiple suggestions for what might be going on. All of which I had already ruled out before calling the ENT in the first place!!!

Call my dentist, did it, and went for a check up.
Go for acupuncture, already do it. Doesn't help actually makes me feel worse for a few days afterward.
Could be migraines, Already on maintenance drugs and the imitrex doesn't touch the pain, so I tend to doubt that one. But it's the only thing left so off to the neurologist I go to see if there is something else I can do.
And her last suggestion is to go to the pain clinic and get botox shots for my facial pain. I want to know why I have the facial pain first, and I'm not so sure I want botox shot into my face, thank you very much.

But since the ENT actually looked up my nose, said it looked nasty and then proceeded to treat me for a sinus infection, what is up with the back tracking now. I understand that the CT came back clear, but, something is obviously wrong, she SAW it. I think she just gave up, and since she is part of a huge group, I'm screwed!

I am just so frustrated. My body is clearly trying to fight something. I feel just a little more run down everyday and the "sinus" symptoms don't go away.

I wonder if you have crohns in your sinuses? A girl I worked with had sores in her nose from her crohns disease and her nose started to look a little disfigured. She saw a specialist in Boston but I don't know who and I don't have contact with her anymore to find out. They decided it was the crohns and treated it w/ Pred I think.

Zanne...you are a trooper! I am soooooo sorry this isn't clearing up for you! And it sounds like you are trying everything... Here's yet another thought...

about three years ago my daughter was dating a young man who has a "half gene" for cystic fibrosis (apparently folks with this often have chronic sinusitis. Interestingly, "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" says on the front that the SCD also addresses CF...). At the time she was dating him I did a lot of reading on sinus infections, because he seemed to have one year round. He was miserable most of the time. In fact, he took a prophylactic dose of antibiotics year round for this sinus condition. Where am I going with this? Well, I remember a Mayo Clinic break-through study at the time that said chronic sinus infections are fungal. Fungal! And if that's true, then antibiotics would not be effective and possibly make things worse. The article said they were developing an anti-fungal nasal spray in hopes that would help chronic sufferers. It seems to me, therefore, an anti-fungal diet (there are many that qualify, even the SCD), the anti-fungal nasal spray (if it exists) and possibly treatment with a systemic anti-fungal medication (diflucan, nystatin) MIGHT help (see your doctor! I'm no expert here! Just searching for another avenue!).

Here's a site that explains this better than I can and has an anti-fungal diet: http://www.bodyecology.com/07/01/25/prevent_and_eliminate_sinusitis.php

And the old boy-friend? Well, he had to constantly take an ADDITIONAL antibiotic in conjunction with his prophylactic dose to "get over" his sinus infections. Personally, I don't believe he EVER got over them. I think he had the fungal situation going, made WORSE by the antibiotics and his TERRIBLE diet (he was a sugaroholic, junk-foodoholic, etc.). Last I heard, he was going to a new ENT who was going to try the anti-fungal approach.

Maybe call around to different ENT offices and ask them if the doctor there treats chronic sinusitis in an anti-fungal manner. It sounds to me like your ENT has given up; your situation is out of her league. (the botox recommendation was...um...remarkable...) Surely there's someone who can help! Possibly a Naturopath? We have a local one who is also an MD. The best of both worlds because he can prescribe things like anti-fungals, but also coach you on a systemic approach.

These are just my thoughts! I'm hoping something works for you and soon!
