I think that you use psyllium as part of your regimen. Do you use it to control your BM's or to reduce gas and bloating? I'm just wondering because I was just reading that it can actually cause more gas, so I'm confused...

thanks
Mike

I use Prodiem fibre supplement which contains pysillium, some people take just pysillium and swear by it too and say that buying it in bulk is very inexpensive.

Pysillium will likely cause more gas and bloating too, as with any fibre supplement, this is normal, just your system adjusting to it and that's why it's important to start with a small amount and increase only if necessary (increase slowly as well) and drinking plenty of water with it is very important as well.

I was very gassy and bloated before using fibre supplements and had a lot of frequency so my GI suggested I take a fibre supplement daily and indefinitely, best advice I've ever gotten from a GI.

It cut back my daily BM's, helped stop all the mucus (bee propolis was huge in cutting back most of my mucus, the fibre supplement was the icing on the cake though). Once my system adjusted (took me 3 months) then no more bloating and very little gas, it also formed my stools better (no more mush) and I'm able to tolerate eating fibreous foods without getting all gassy and bloated.

Thanks :). I used to take 4 of those metamucil caps every day until about a year ago, for constipation actually. I'm not constipated without them anymore but was wondering about starting them (slowly) to combat the gas. What do you think?

I think it's a good idea...how did you find your gas when you were taking 4/day?

The great thing about fibre is it aids with C or D so it's a win win situation...I plan to continue taking mine daily for the rest of my life because I'm to afraid to find out what would happen if I stopped and I'd hate to go through that adjustment period all over again.

My gas was very manageable for the most part, but that was before my flare.

When I started to flare (gas, increased bm's, pain, blood) about 4 months ago I went off the fibre. I haven't gone into remission still and the gas comes and goes so maybe the fibre was something that kept me feeling well. So I'm considering introducing it.

Depending on the result of my latest liver test I may stopping the 6MP and starting MTX. :(

I was flaring (of course, I have been my entire 17 yrs with having CD) but flaring quite severely actually at the time that my GI suggested I go the fibre supplement route. If you find it brings improvements then stick with it, of course you can double check with your doc. I get away with only having to take one tab a day (I take it at bedtime) so if you end up needing to take 4/day then definitely double check with your doc that it's an okay amount to be taking indefinitely...my GI never clarified a specific amount, he just said find the amount that works best for me cuz everyone is different.

Good luck with your liver test results and all!

Ok, thanks. The type that I was getting, it said to take up to 5 caps, 3 times a day, so 4 caps a day was a moderate dose.

Thanks again!

Holy smokes, that's a lot (up to 5, 3X/day) for a recommended dosage, the Prodiem that I take says up to 2 caps/day no more than 4 times total in a day. Hopefully this time if you start on them again you won't have to take as many (4/day), that must get expensive.

Good luck and let me know how things go :)
