Hey Gail- I have a hernia at the base of my resect scar. Feels pretty freaky from the outside but hasn't caused me any pain yet. I can't remember what the mesh is made of but I do know there has been a recall of a certain type of it that IS used to repair them.  Try googling around and see if you come up with anything.  Hope you feel better soon and thanks again for the shout out!

I had a bowel resection in May 05 and a hernia op in September 06. My incisional hernia was repaired with Gortex.

I know this is kind of off the subject, but I also had a resection and now have a hernia near my belly button. Actually I have two belly buttons due to a botched incision. My doctor said not to worry about it but push it back in when it pops out. I don't want to have another surgery, but it worries me that it might not be safe.

any replies would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Hi All,

I am scheduled to have my major abdominal hernia repaired on November 3rd. I got the hernia from having open wound healing from emergency surgery (my bowel resection fell apart), so it's a BIG hernia and needs to be repaired. They are not sure if they will be able to use mesh with me because I have an abcess that will also need to be cut out at the same time, and the mesh makes infection more likely. Does anyone else have experience with this?

Hi Blossom I had open wound healing for a large abcess 2 years ago and a resection this past Jan. I don't have much knowledge about it but mine is large but not a hole as I thought but a weakness and buldge none the less. For now my GP says it doesn't need surgery unless it starts to pain. I guess it's a wait and see game for now for me. I don't envy you having to deal with a abcess too .Is yours paining I thought I read somrtimes it can take a year for strength to built up in that area. Perhaps you should start a new thread on your situation as I too would like to know more. lol gail

I don't have pain, but I have to wear a hernia belt to keep me from bulging out and I can't lift anything at all. . . My doctor explained that the big problem with a hernia is that your intestines might get "strangulated" if they herniate (bulge out) and then it would be an emergency surgery.  So, I am opting for the repair surgery and hoping for the best.  Do you wear a hernia belt for protection?  Do you have to be careful when you cough?  Just wondering . . . .

Hi No she never mentioned a belt but did discuss underware I sure hope Sniper don't see this post ha ha. The strecthy kind like a elastic thing but I never got one she said I could use that if I wanted to. Yes if there is a small hole it can become strangulated. But mine is not so much a whole but more of a weakened area I guess. I am hoping that the area will strenghten in time since it was only Jan. since my surgery. When did you have your surgery? Never mentioned anything about coughing although I'am starting to hold my belly just in case. We did talk about adhensions though . lol gail
