I had bowel resection surgery last year and I still have chronic diarrhea. I've tried a number of over the counter meds and prescriptions but so far, nothing seems to help. Yesterday, my doc gave me a prescription for codeine. He tells me he's pretty sure it will help with the diarrhea as one of it's side affects is constipation. He also tells me that it's a narcotic and addictive. I have enough problems now and don't want to add an addiction to the list. Has anyone taken codeine for diarrhea? Did it help? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just started taking it last week. For the most part, it has been a wonderful help for the diarrhea (see my other post re: it stopped working at the end of my second week after humira injection but started working again today) and the cramping associated with the diarrhea. I don't really feel the pain killing or sleepy effects from it--the dose is low. 30mg tablet 2-3 times a day. It only makes me sleepy if I am tired already.

its been used for that for decades. i would not worry about getting addicted. try it for a while to see if it works for you. it should only take a couple weeks to find out.

Thanks for responding. Since I have most of my colon removed, there is nothing to absorb the water so I'm wondering how much the codeine will help. Any help would be a blessing. Also, how long did it take to work for you?

well, im missing all but about 2 feet and its working for me right now. i got this abcess in my tooth and been doing the percoset. stops me up prettty good at this dose. 10/650's every 4-6 hours... a little much for your puposes though.. if you can get some tylenol 3's , darn neer the same thing. . it over the counter in some countries like canada. i bet it will take hold in a couple days. also for someone who knows, try cutting back on sugaree sodas, ice teas, coolaid etc... if you have a watery type problem. i know its hard but it works on some. the sugars just cause the gut to dump. me, im too addicted. i cut back when i can but i gotta have my soda.

I’ve recently had to take codeine for an exposed nerve in my tooth/jaw and I found it really helped with the pain, but gave me stomach pain/cramps/gas and the next day my stomach was bleeding like crazy.

I think it depends, if you’re on anti-inflammatories, the pharmacist said it can stir up crohn’s.

I think, as with most if not all things crohn’s-related, it depends on the individual. Giving it a try won’t kill you, so you’ll be able to find out for yourself how your tum reacts.
