Has anyone had to get IV iron infusions because of their intestines not being able to absorb iron? My dr told me today that I'll have to go to a hematologist and start getting them and I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with iron infusions and knew how long the infusions take. thanks!

I get Venofer infusions. Each time I've had a series of 4, and get them once a week. It takes about a half hour to do the benadryl prep, and 2 hours for the infusion. Unfortunately, they haven't done a whole lot for my iron levels.

I had to get 2 infusions because of my internal bleeding causing me to have low iron. It took about a half a day. The first one I had in the GI office, the second one I had in a Cancer Treatment Center. They thought my blood cells were too small and wanted to make sure I did not have this other problem that is gentitci (wish I could spell)

I just had my first about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I got there about 8:30 am and didn't get out of there until almost 6 pm. They usually give you a test bag first and then wait a hour. If you don't have any problems, then the hook you up with the rest of the iron.

I will tell you I did the Iron Dextran and so far no improvement on the fatigue, but that could just be me. I may need another one soon.

I am in the middle of a set of venofer infusions of iron right now. It depends on the quantity/dosage as to how long it takes. I get 250ml and it's infused at 200ml/hr so it takes an hour and 15 mins. I don't get a benadryl pre-med for the iron and I've never had any kind of reaction. This is my 3rd time getting iron by IV because my body doesn't absorb in pill form...probably from the crohn's. It takes several weeks (at least in my experience) for the iron to "kick in" and make you feel better. My nasty headaches are gone after 3 weeks from my 1st infusion and I'm starting to get some energy back.

GOODLUCK!
