I got my first ever abnormal Pap and was told I have HPV. I have one partner my hubby for the last 12 years (plus the dating years before) so it either stayed dormant for years or Humira maybe caused it to come out? I have read some stuff on the net that immune suppressants can cause abnormal paps.

I just wanted to hear from all of you... Mine is the HPV that does not usually lead to cancer but now I have to be tested yearly to see if it does develop into one that does....

Just one more health issue to add to my list of problems...I feel broken sometimes!!!

thanks for reading!

Karen,
I am so sorry. Yes autoimmune disease can contribute to abnormal paps, seems to be kinda the norm on this board. That being said we have had some (abnormally young like 20 year olds) women with cervix problems which included HPV. Hopefully they will see this post.
Good Luck,

Hi Karen,
I dont take Humira but am on pred and MTX. Last year I had an abnormal pap smear (a CIN 111, they call it in Australia) and had to have around a quarter of my cervix removed (this was two weeks before my bowel resection!). I was told I had HPV and like you wondered how this was possible when I have been married so long, Gyno said it lays dormant and that the immuno suppressants triggers it off, that made me feel better and stopped the sideway glances at my husband lol. My six month pap smear came back good and Im due for one now (got to get to this!) so hopefully that will be ok too.
Try not to panic and with regular pap smears you will be keeping a good eye on it. Take care.

I will let you know asap, actually have an appt tomorrow with the obgyn.  Been having abnormal bleeding & need to get it checked out.  Also, feel pressure in the pelvic area, have to get up during the night 2-3 to urinate.  My blood levels last year showed I was in post menapause but, as I said above, abnormal bleeding:  have cycle for 2-3 days & a week later bleed for 2-3 weeks very heavy.  I never had any cycle problems in my life until that last 6 months or so.  Started Humira June 07.  Also, I heard cymbalta has a side effect of urine retension.  Just had blood work done from the GI last month & just had high MCV levels & low MCHC levels.  The docs nurse said everything looked good.  I got a copy of the results, that how I know about those levels.  Not sure what they mean.   And my WSR is normal.  Just another day of the rollercoaster.

Dx with CD 1987, 3 colon resections, 3 rectal abcess sx, anterior cervical neck fusion with plate & screws,6/2008. Major depression/anxiety, kidney stones & sx to remove, now 45 yrs old.  Still trying to figure out this disease & all the little extra complications that come with this rollarcoaster of a life with CD. Meds:Humira 40mg every other wk, Imuran .75 daily, welchol 625 x 3 daily, cymbalta 60 mg daily, fish oil, folic acid,Vit B12,inject monthly, Oscal w/Vit D, Darvocet N 100 4-5 daily, xanex .5 nightly

Karen> Please note that it is generally recommended that with all women, a Pap smear be performed annually. This is, of course, to detect abnormal cells that may result from a number of issues, but primarily HPV infection. In this regard, if my understanding is correct, nothing will change for you in the sense that you'll still be getting a Pap test- unless they're requiring something like direct visualization by fiber optic scope. That would seem to be unnecessary unless you have been exposed to a high-risk strain, which you apparently have not been.

thanks for all the info everyone! I feel terrible about it.... I guess I caught it as a stupid teen. I was not even promiscuous. I just feel gross.
I know my hubby has been faithful and so have I so it must have been dormant for a long while. I have not had a pap since I knew I had CD and started all the meds... so that makes sense the meds could trigger it.

Jo, I like the comment about sideways glances at your husband that made me laugh, I felt the same way till I started reading a little.

karendee, I started having paps when I was probably 21 and all were normal until I started Remicade at about age 25.  Then they came back atypical every time, but the HPV test was always negative.  I think I only had two while on Remicade and then I switched to Cimzia (clinical trial).  My pap then came back fine.  Now I'm on Humira and we'll see what happens this time.  But, I think someone posted a link to an article on here once about how women on TNF blockers or with auto-immune diseases or something have more atypical paps than other women.  It was from some kind of OB/GYN medical journal, but I don't remember the name.  Maybe you can search back through old posts...it's been in the last year I think.

Crohn's Disease, Acid Reflux/Gastritis, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Endometriosis, Arthritis, Depression/Anxiety.  Too many meds to list them all.  =)
