so i've been seeing all over the telli, radio, and hearing people talk about colon cleansing and the health benefits from it. of course there is some merit to it but some of course make claims that have this sounding as a panacea to your health ailments. as most of you know, i eat and live a pretty healthy lifestyle compared to most and i like to experiment on myself with new homeopathic and alternative meds and dietary things. so i finally got around to asking my naturpathic doc about this to get his opinion. he told me it is not for people with crohn's and he would strongly advise me against doing a colon cleanse. the reason being that with crohns you have an inflamed/compromised digestive tract. he's seen people who use it irritate the colon even more and in some cases even exacerbate the disease and bring it out of remission/into a major flare.

so in summary, word of advice to all: dont do a colon cleanse if you have crohns (probably goes for UC too). thought i'd pass that along.

Here here! I agree. I did it once years ago before I even knew I had crohns. I took a powdered something with all kinds of stuff in it. After about 1 week I was cramping up a storm. I asked the nutritionist I was doing it through at the time....told him that the stuff gives me cramps. He said "Gee, it shouldn't do that. Maybe you shouldn't take it anymore." And that was that for that! Don't know how much I hurt myself at the time, but I know it didn't do me any favors.

CrazyHarry, do you follow the fasting recommended by Rubin? A half day, once a week, right? If one were to truly fast--like clear liquids only, for maybe 3 days--wouldn't that be like a cleansing of sorts? Seems like a healthier way... Just curious about your thoughts on this!

No, those colon cleanse thingies give me the heebie geebies skull and my colon is pretty darn good. If I were to do something, it would be a fast.

hi emom! no, i dont keep up with the partial weekly fasts anymore. i need to start working that back in though. lately i've been trying to gain weight so i've been eating more and working out more but i find on the makers diet that eating this way is not conducive to gaining weight in that your body will find its optimum weight and then stay there. i've been working nights and some days lately so i hardly sleep any more, just cat naps here and there, so being up more i'm eating more - 4-5 meals per day with snacks and not doing any exercise cos i dont have time and am so sleep deprived my energy levels are low - and yet i am not gaining weight. very interesting. i should be off this hectic schedule after next week though and then i'll look into reintroducing fasting again. it is handy around the holidays cos we all seem to over eat this time of the year.

Are you referring to a dietary colon cleansing or the procedure that is done through a colon cleansing machine? My wife's best friend actually started a business for colon cleansing through a special machine that is inserted rectally and uses fluid to cleanse the colon and bowel. She has is located in her brother-in-laws office (he is a chiropractor) and really has done well with it. She and all of her family swear that it has helped them immensely. She has Lyme's disease and was introduced to it a Lyme's disease clinic in Nevada. After trying conventional medication and failing on it, she went to this clinic and spent a few month there getting homeopathic treatment and used one of these machines daily. When she returned home, she and her sister(wife of the chiropractor) went back to Boston for special training and purchased a couple of these machines. I
I am not totally sold on homeopathic medicine, but we spent a whole evening discussing this concept. Unfortunately, if you have Crohn's disease or U.C., they do not recommend it due to the fear that the process could cause damage to you colon or perforation. Most of us do not have the strongest bowels, so this make sense. She said that there are other clinics that will allow it, but I would be really hesitant. There are also personal home machines that are available.

ill save ya all a ton of money,,, you want a colon cleanse get 3 soft tacos at taco bell with extra cheese, then drink a medium pepsi followed by a nacho supreme with extra meat.. that will do ya for under 5 bucks.

i disagree randy. that will have my digestive system working in reverse - clearing out my stomach, not my colon. fast food to me is like tequila - sure it goes down easy but as soon as it hits the stomach, my stomach says to it "you need to get out now, and you're leaving the way you came in". no fun.
