so its been a while since i've posted here, because i've been in remission since my last perianal abscess disaster about a year ago.

last week i had an incisional hernia repaired for the second time (from my resection back in 2006)
and everything was going well until i few days ago i started having that all too familiar pain in my bottom.
i thought for sure an abscess, since every time i feel this pain that what it turns out to be.

took myself to emerg and got in for an MRI today. My GI told me they dont see an abscess just fistualas and what im feeling is probably one of them trying to burrow its way out through the skin. the pain is right where i have a surgeon created fistula in order to get in to drain an abscess over a year ago
all i can say is OUCH!!!

the pain in my bottom is worse than the pain of having my stomach cut open from top to bottom.

i've been in remission for about a year, and on remicade, why is this happening now?

has anyone had a bad flare up caused by unrelated surgery??

and also, im on cipro and flagyl now, other that hot baths, is there something i can do to move this fistula along? i've never had just a fistula acting up. only abscesses that required draining which provides almost instant relief.

all i can think of is that my hernia surgery caused my crohns to flare.
it feels like it will never end.

thanks

Hi Cara I don't know why this is happening now maybe your Rem. isn't working. I too have a hernia and have not had surgery as of yet to repair it ,my resection was in Jan.. Sounds like you sure are having a load of pain there and I don't know what to say that will help hope the antibotics help .I am not a fistula lover as I have had two of them .

Did they say how close to the surface the fistula is or can they tell. Hope it gets better. Hang in there and wish there was more I could say to help. Do the soaks help at all? lol gail

I'm not sure how to make fistulas better, but I'm curious about your situation because I find my cd gets worse after unrelated surgery/illness too.

How long does it take for fistulas to develop to the point of surfacing to the skin? I'm wondering if your crohn's has been simmering for a while and is now showing itself?

Sorry for your troubles and hope you feel better soon :-)

my remicade WAS 3 weeks late this past infusion, because my approval for coverage ran out and nobody told me until i went to fill the prescription.
but i felt totally fine and was 100% before my hernia repair.
this is my second time on remicade (i went off of it after my resection, and then back on a year and a half later when i developed 2 perianal abscesses)
its always been very successful for me in the past.

it was hard to tell how close to the surface the fistula was but today i've noticed that now theres a bump on the skin like its trying to pop.
will it just do it on its own??
they're getting me in to see my colonol-rectal surgeon this week, so i guess i'll just see what he has to say.

i've never had this before, do the fistulas just burrow their way through the skin?
its just so weird.

gachrons- i had my resection back in may of 2006, the i had the incisional hernia repaired for the first time in March of 2007, but they didnt use the mesh so it just tore right back open. i put if off until now when i decided to get it fixed again, and have a dermoid cyst removed from my ovary at the same time.
may as well kill two birds with one stone.

thanks for the replys!!

Hi Cara I know it is so weird how those fistula's work my one on abdomen after abcess surgery popped up after a couple months at least and that was when I started Rem. and it closed I also was put on a high dose of B-12 too . It just wouldn't close up and would heal then pop till finally it healed.I would think it might open on it's own perhaps it will drain where you had the surgery fis. .I was wandering if you have allergies because I have heard of the mesh and wandering how people with allergies responded to the mesh. lol gail

i dont really have any allergies, but i did have a reaction after the surgery and they had to drain a whole bunch of fluid from my abdomen. they said it common for fluid to build up when you repair a hernia.
i went back into the hospital because i had a fever and was vomiting all day so they did a CT and found the fluid. im lucky it wasnt something more serious.
they say the fluid goes away on its own. they just wanted to make sure it wasnt infected.
anyways. i opted for the mesh because my surgeon told me that 95% of the time when i hernia is repaired without a mesh, it will reoccur because they pull the muscle back together but all it wants to do pull back apart.
i didnt want to have to have it fixed for a 3rd time.

as for my fistula. i think its in the exact spot that i had one from a previous abscess surgery a year ago.
i had an abscess that was in the middle of nowhere, it didnt even have a tract leading to it. so they created one from the skin and i had to have it packed every day for 6 weeks until it healed from the inside out. ouch.
i havent had a problem with it until now.
i got some epsom salts so hopefully that will help it drain on its own. the MRI didnt show any abscess which is good, and my dr said he suspects it will drain on its own but im still going to see my surgeon this week.
they dont always 100% trust the MRI and might opt for an ultra sound like they've done with my bottom for the past two abcesses.

i feel like i havent even had a minute to stop and heal from my hernia surgery. its all been too much

Hi Cara thank you for giving me the info and I know it sometimes takes time for things to get better .I am hoping that this isn't going to cause too much of a problem for you .Hope you have good luck with your ultra sound I had a bit of a abcess near the anal opening and seem to go away with the soaking so keeping fingers crossed for you I also had hemmie problems too. lol gail

just an update.
last night i guess my fistula broke through and started draining.
i cant even believe the relief i had!!
im hardly in any pain at all now, and the pain before was excruciating.

Im still going to see my surgeon next monday so he can have a look, and until then i guess just lots of baths and antibiotics!

thanks for all the well wishes.

OUCH Cara, Ive never had a fistula (touch wood), glad you are now having some relief though.
I had an unrelated surgery in Sept. and yes it flared my Crohn's, not sure why, maybe its the anaesthetic(?sp).
Hope you continue improving.
