I went to the Rheumatologist last week and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.  He suggested I take a Magnesium supplement to help with the muscle aches/pains.  I've heard that it can cause diarrhea in some people.  I guess that wouldn't be a big deal for me, since I have to take Miralax occasionally.  I was wondering if anyone has taken this, and if you had any problems.  Blessings, Julie

I have taken Magnesium off and on because I had heard it helped with headaches. I haven't noticed any change in bathroom runs when I take it vs when I don't but there are several different forms available. Check out a recent thread "migraines + crohn's" for a list of them.

Over on the Fibro board many have found success for their Fibro with a Malic Acid/Magnesium combination. Magnesium can cause D in some. They say you should start at a lower dose and slowly work your way up. You might want to visit that board to get more info.

I started taking 450 mg of magnesium a day a little over a week ago. It hasn't caused me any problems, and has helped a lot with my constipation. They say to start off taking 100 or 200 mg to make sure it agrees with you, and then to increase it if all goes well.

Thank you all for the feedback. I think I am going to try it. If it bothers my bowels, I'll just stop it.

Nanners, I've been posting over in the Fibro section. They have been very helpful!:)

It is important not to take magnesium oxide or other simple salts of magnesium. Magnesium oxide is nearly insoluble, and poorly absorbed. For some reason, magnesium sulfate is poorly absorbed despite its high solubility. They'll end up pulling water osmotically out of your gut, making D worse.

Chelated forms of magnesium are best. I take magnesium malate about every other day- 1250 mg, so it's a pretty good slug. I'm asymptomatic on the SCD, so anything that bothers me does it FAST- and the magnesium malate hasn't given me the slightest problem.

Group,

Imho, yes, for muscle pain, headaches, and fibro, mag-malate is a great choice. Start slow, and take at night whenever possible. This slowed one daughter's asthma way down, and stopped another's headaches. My Natures Life  has about 200mg of mag and 1000mg malic acid, and I take 1-2 depending in my BM's that day. It helps us to relax and sleep too. I could not get along with out it. Mag malate is the form that best relaxes and tones muscle tissue. For our customers, we use the phrase "take it to bowel tolerance". Good luck, I hope this brings you as much relief as it has for my family. Peace and Good Health.

Thank you so much for the recommendations and suggestions.:-) I did a google search and it seems there are many brands out there. Does anyone recommend one brand over another? Blessings, Julie

MMMNAVY, thank you so much for suggesting that my Vitamin D levels get checked. My GI never checked them before, but the Rheumy ordered a blood test for it. I should get the results next week. Blessings, Julie:-)

Julie,
Source Naturals or Nature's Life are great brands for Mag-Malate. I think both are SCD legal, if that matters to you, but double check me on that.

What if you have constipation? Will Mag-Malate be as helpful Mag-Oxide?

Spooky,

Yes, Mag-Malate will ease constipation, and is less likely to cause watery D. See Osprey's comments above. You will have much better control with this form, and it is less likely to cause cramping, even if you do a bit to much.

Dang, I just ordered a bottle of Mag-Oxide a couple days ago. Next time I'll remember to get Mag-Malate. I learn a lot of good info on this board, thanks!
