Would you know it if you had one of these?  What if it went from your intestine to another organ (bladder, etc)?  Would there be obvious symptoms?
Thanks so much!

I didn't realize my first fistula was a fistula. I thought it was a hemorrhoid, because it looked like one. The only thing I remember that was weird about it was that there was a weird round spot on each side of it (like a core that went through the middle). One day, the "hemorrhoid" magically went away, almost overight (thinking back, I may have been on 6MP at the time). The only reason I know it was a fistula was because a different doctor later said I had a fistula track (a scar I guess?) where the "hemorrhoid" was. Plus, it came back once, minus the original hemorrhoid aspects. Imuran took care of it the second time round.

I think I also had a fistula that exited...ahem...in the vaginal area (I'd feel some gas in my intestines, but it inexplicably came out of the vagina). Thankfully, antibiotics and Imuran took care of it before it became a big issue.

If you had one that went into your bladder, I imagine you would have some fecal matter in your urine, and maybe gas as well.

Hi I knew after I got a very large abcess that I had to have operated on and then later a SBFT and of course I had the CT scan as well .One fistula was from large to small bowel and the other a fistula from my abcess surgery I could tell what that one was easy enough because my incision for the abcess surgery did not completely heal. lol gail

Thanks for your replies!
So, if you had one in either the bladder or vaginal area, you would likely have gas and/or fecal matter from wherever location you had it?

I've only had a rectal one, which started as a really painful abcsess. So yes, I knew for sure that it was there. I'm guessing it might be harder to know when they are up inside at first. I can imagine there would also be pain, possibly fever from infection at some point. I've also heard of passing fecal matter, gas, and blood in the urine with those as well.
Diagnosed with Crohn's Disease 2/06 after sever GI bleed. Has been suffering since 1998. History of rectal fistula and gallbladder removal. Taking Asacol, Questran, Toprol XL (for high blood pressure). Tapered off prednisone a month ago!
