Hi there,
Yesterday I woke up with a sore throat, and felt like i had the flu all day long. I couldnt eat, didnt vomit but sure felt like it. This morning, i feel a bit better, i have an appetite I cant wait to eat. But!!, I have nothing in my tummy, and my belly is completely distended, and im also having this horrible pain in the side of my tummy, kind of beside my belly button, it feels like someone is stabbing me with a Knife :(, it hurts real bad, it comes and goes about every 3 seconds.
If I press on the spot where i think its hurting from, I also have a sore spot in that area, and it hurts real bad too,
Does anybody know what this could be?
I dont want to sound stupid, but could it just be a build up of gas? because there is gas constantly running through my tummy. This really really is horrible, thank you for any insights

I agree with Gail on this one.  Sounds like an obstruction.  I would probably at least contact your doctor or if he is slow to respond head on over to the ER.  If you start vomiting even though you haven't eaten and its like green bile, just head to the ER.  Good luck and keep us posted.

If it is lower right side it could also be your appendix.

Thank you everybody, the pain has simmered down a little, still having the sharp pains, but sharper, just not as often, more so like every couple of minutes rather than every couple of seconds, i dont want the hospital to think that im stupid, or anything, so i will probably just wait it out, and see if it gets any worse, and yes if I vomit at all, i will head to the er immediately,
thanks again in advance

So glad to hear it settled down, I was wondering how you were. Keep an eye on it, okay. Are you passing any gas or stool at all? If those symptoms return and you can't move air or stool and start vomiting, go to the ER right away. Good luck!!

I am still having that pain, a little bit, and i have also felt it on the other side in the same spot, i have not had one bm all day, and barely able to pass gas, which sucks, my tummy is sooooo big, and i just finished eating, im hoping it will make me go to the washroom, i would rather have it out, than building up in my stomach.
This pain is definitly new, like something I havent felt before, I hope that it gets resolved.
thanks again

really? for real?
What if its just nothing?
The last time i went there, was when i had a small bowel follow through, and i hadnt had a bm in two days, i thought that i was impacted, the doctor pushed on my stomach, and i had a bm when i went home, i just dont get it.
There is definitly gas in my stomach, as i can hear it, and feel it running through my body, but im sooooo bloated,
I have a question, if im able to have a bowel movement, does this mean that there is absolutely no obstruction?
The last time i had a bm, i was constipated for the first and then, watery pasty yucky stuff at the end.
Thank you for all of your help........
How long should I wait, if i decide to wait?
I have not vomited or anything, just have a lot of gas pains, not able to release hardly and havent had a bm,
I dont want the doc to think that im stupid, or that im overreacting.

The first time I had an obstruction I had pains around my belly button area that would come in waves much like labor pains.  I couldnt pass gas or stool at all.  My gut was huge and the sounds coming from my gut were loud.  The pain had started much like bad gas pains that just got worse as the day moved on.  By the time I got to the ER I was hurting really bad, I didn't vomit until I had a been at that ER for a couple hours.

I would just pay close attention to how you are feeling.  If the pain gets any worse, please do go to the ER.  Explain ALL your symptoms and they will probably do xrays or a CT Scan to see if there is an obstruction.  Everything you are describing sure sounds like the beginning of an obstruction.  But if you don't feel the pain is that bad, then hold off until things change.  But dont let it get out of hand.

Good Luck,

Gail *Nanners*

So what if the doctor thinks your stupid or overreacting. I think some doctors think we're stupid no matter what we know! Go with your gut feeling (no pun intended!). If your instincts tell you something is wrong than go with that instinct. You can always say to the triage nurse or the first doc you see, 'I might be overreacting but...' or 'I hope you don't think I'm stupid for coming but...'. You're probably going to hear that its ok and better safe than sorry. I really hope you start feeling better soon, but if not I hope you get treated. When I had a stricture, almost a complete obstruction seen on a CT scan and told I needed surgery and had it 10 days later, I was in pain but not horrible, had D and loose stools. A lot of gurgling too.

Thanks so much for the tips,
my temperature isnt as bad as it was last night, however my eyes are burning, and im still a bit achy, i had what was like a flu last night, the pain does seem to shift, and by distented area, you mean, swollen right? my whole abdomen lower and upper is swollen and distended, it gets like that a lot, i did that pulling the skin thing, and i felt some cramping, what is recoil? It wasnt like the pain that i felt when i pressed on the sore spot, and that area is not swollen or red either, it was more like a cramp,
This may sound a bit silly, but im starting to have them all over, especially in my back, and uder my ribs area, but also still in my stomach, also, there is lots of pressure on my pelvis, I hate this grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I think you need to get checked out. I haven't had a blockage or stricture but everything you describe sure sounds like what I've heard here many, many times. If you get to the point you are vomiting I'm not sure you would want to wait that long as that would mean there are toxins backing up in your body. Better safe than sorry. Also, if your fever is 101.5 or higher you could already have a bacterial infection working on you. Please take care of yourself...your family needs you!

Thanks Gail, if im no better later on today im thinking about going to the emergency department, to see whats wrong.
There is one thing Im wondering, is it possible to still have a bowel movement and have an obstruction at the same time, i havent gone since the day before yesterday but, I went before that, most times very narrow stool, and like water, and i had to push it out as though i was constipated.
thanks again

I agree with Navy I think its time to go this checked out. You can have some D and still have an obstruction, it might just be a parcial obstruction. But you aren't moving anything out, so I think its best to go get checked out. Good luck!

Hi there,
I went to emerg, and they determined with an xray, that i was constipated, well duh, i already knew that, so they did blood work and also gave me an enema, how embarrassing that was. Anyways, she tried to say that my stool was constipated, and it wasnt even formed, and all stringy and stuff. I had to push real hard to get it out. Immediately after that, i had some very severe cramping, i was in tears, and almost vomited. They still havent stopped, the cramps that is, but i am home, they pretty much said, we have done what we need to do, you can go home.......
My abdomen is still really big, and I still feel like im impacted, the doctors were not a lot of help,
but thanks anyways, everybody
take care, and i will keep you informed

When you went in did you tell them "I think I am having a bowel obstruction?"

Kelly, I cant tell you the number of times in the 2 years before my first resection, that I was told the pains were gastritis or constipation. I now know they were in fact obstructions, because the pain was exactly what I felt when they finally diagnosed my obstruction. Keep an eye on things and if they don't improve, I would go right back to the ER and tell them you are still in really bad pain and you don't think its constipation, you think you are possibly obstructing. Be sure to eat a little lighter foods (i.e. soups etc) until the pain subsides.

And I don't see how you could become constipated in just 2 days. Usually the impaction happens after being constipated for a longer period of time. Diarrhea can get past a stricture but larger stools can't.

Big Hugs,
Gail *Nanners*

Thanks nanners, i did tell them that i thought that i may have an obstruction when I went in, they didnt seem to think that it was that serious.
I am going to keep an eye on it for sure, it keeps coming in waves :( and is very uncomfortable. The nurse seemed to think it normal that i had to push like hell to get it out too, and it was not formed.
I really really hate when docs make you feel stupid, as soon as i saw what doctor was on, i was horrified, i hate him. As far as Im concerned he does not do his job properly.
thanks again
kelly
OH and i have been constipated off and on, for a while, but its not usually formed when it comes out finally, its like it was today.

Hi Kelly At least you went in and hopefully the enema will work however you need to run this by your GI as D can come out but doesn't mean things are good.Did the X-ray show you were full of stools? lol gail
