I have a nasty head cold and do not feel like running out for NyQuil - I'm not a huge fan of cold meds b/c anything w/ psedunephrine makes my heart race.  So I got desperate and went for an old Irish remedy that sounds so gross.  Maybe it is because I can't smell and therefore can't taste, but this was really good and cleared my head right up.  I'll give you my proportions but adjust however you like:

3/4 shot of whisky
2 tablespoons peppermint schnapps (I used Dr. McGullicuddy)
teaspoon of honey
squirt of lemon
topped off the mug w/ water (so it was 3/4 full)
Microwaved till hot.

Yum.

I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

as a kid grandpaws cold medicine was just the whisky, lemon, and honey in a juice glass. he always told me hold your nose and don't stop drinking till it was gone.

it always worked by the next day I was feeling better. nowadays they would call it child abuse or something.
I shed tears when I found this place...I have felt so alone for so long...Its good to know there are caring ppl out there who can understand where I'm coming from.

I've done the old peppermint, whiskey, honey and lemon juice for years and it helps a caugh too but its no match for a good RX for nose spray and also I use zicam as soon as I feel a cold is coming on. Makes them much shorter..But,, if you put enough whiskey in your home made brew, you probable don't really feel better, but you dont care either.
