After I have a bowel movement, regardless of whether the stool is formed or loose, I always get a little bit in my underwear at some point afterward. It's not a result of not wiping properly (I even use baby wipes when I can), and it doesn't always happen immediately after (it can happen hours later). It even happens after showering/bathing after a bowel movement. I don't think it is typical incontinence b/c it's a very small amount that wouldn't classify as a full bowel movement.

This problem is mostly just inconvenient and gross - I always carry extra underwear with me and wear pads after having a bowel movement -- it is not painful. It's also been going on for almost a year now. My GI seems more concerned about getting my inflammation under control and has not focused on this problem even though I keep raising it, but I would love for there to be a solution for this nasty problem.

Please let me know if you have had a similar experience or if you have any idea of what this could be. I have a GI appt this week and I am going to push for him to consider this issue once again. Thanks!

I'm sorry you're having trouble with this. I had similar problems when I was having abscess/fistula problems, but it only happens occasionally now that those are cleared up. The best trick I ever had to alleviate the inconvenience and ickyness was to wear just 4x4" guaze pads between my cheeks. Most medical supply places and some pharmacies sell them in bulk, so they can end up being WAY cheaper than some other options.

I guess your doctor thinks that if the inflammation is under control this wouldn't be happening? I wish I had a good answer for you... I just know that mine gets better when my gut is better...

Stress to your doc that this is a quality of life issue for you and that he needs to give you some answers.

Yes, I have that too. I have a fistula that has cut through the sphincter muscle, so I always ooze gross stuff. Patientspiders has given you good advice on the gauze pads: I do something similar, and just keep two folded sheets of toilet paper between my cheeks. I also always wear a pad.

I think your idea of pushing your gi to explore this issue is a good one. If you have a fistula, then it would be good to have it acknowledged and treated. If you don't have a fistula, then you still need to know why this is happening. My guess is that it's affecting your quality of life; am I right?

Best wishes to you,

Thanks Patientspiders and Ivy! Gauze pads are a great idea -- I am not sure why I didn't think of that sooner! It is definitely impacting my quality of life. I am definitely going to push for some answers on this at my appointment.
