I was taking 6MP when my wife became pregnant.  We tried to conceive without having me on anything, but after 9 months I flared so I started taking it again.  My GI said that most studies said that it's safe to conceive while the father is taking 6MP and supported me doing so, so we went ahead.  He said a couple studies that brought 6MP into question were very small and not well designed.  But for some reason, now I'm feeling nervous about it, I don't know why.

Are there any guys here who took 6MP while conceiving?  It might make me feel better to hear from someone else.

thanks
Mike

If it makes you feel any better we have many mom's who have given birth while on meds such as 6mp, Humira and Remicade. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hope that helps.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 33 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain, Zofran, Phenergan, Probiotics, and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis. Currently my Crohns is in remission.

I was going to say the same thing as Nanners. My GI okayed me to get pregnant on 6mp. If moms can take it, seems like the risk from Dad shouldn't be too great.
Hoping to stay in remission after the birth of a healthy baby girl. On Pentasa during my pregnancy, went med-free 2 months to nurse (stupid), but back on Pentasa and still nursing.

Future dads are OK to take 6-mp, imuran, remicade, humira, etc.

A major exception to this is methotrexate.

My doctors were very clear that getting pregnant on MTX is a Bad Idea, but no one expressed concern about Imuran, Remicade, or anything else that I've been on.  (Considering the state of my love life, if I turned up pregnant we'd all have bigger things to worry about than which medications I've been on!)  Talk to your doctor and your wife's OB/GYN to be sure, but as far as I have ever heard you should be OK.

Thanks for your replies, it helps even though you are all women :).  (I think)

Beave, is this what your GI or OB told you?  The research out there seems to limited and conflicted.

I went to two IBD medical conferences (2007, 2008) and this topic was discussed there.  They (experts from Mayo clinic, Cedars-Sinai, et al) all felt that the meds were safe for conception -- except methotrexate.  I could probably dig up the studies they referenced but I don't have the handouts on me right now.

By the way, I'm a male - but no kids.

Great beave, that helps. Just kind of stressing here, but it's nice to know the top experts agree with my GI. I will also bring this up next week at our first ob/gyn appointment.

Rider Fan, I know it's easy for us Crohnnies to stress about everything we possibly can, but right now (and I mean this in the nicest possible way), knock it off. :)

You'll have more than enough time to worry/stress about your child during the 18 to 21 years he/she will be living at home. While he/she is living where he's at now...well... that's the time you get to kick back and relax; it's not in your hands. Spend the time daydreaming about what's to come, not stressing about what meds you were taking during conception.

And congratulations on the new addition to the family! :)

Entocort 9 mg/day, Prednisone 20 mg/day, started Humira 1/22/08, started 100 mg of Azasan (Imuran) 2/20/08. Increased Azasan to 150 mg 10/15/08. Discontinued Humira 11/03/08 after extreme fatigue and moderate muscle aches. Hoping to start Cimzia around Thanksgiving.

I'm convinced that Prednisone is the root of all evil, and primarily responsible for global warming.

Rider,

I'm a 38 year old male with one child. I was diagnosed 8 years ago and was told that the prednisone I was taking would lower sperm count. I never asked about 6MP, but I wasn't taking it at the time. Now I take Imuran but I'm also finished having kids :).
