I want to SCREAM!

I have simply SWELLED on the steroids - 21lbs in 3 months.

You name the side effect, I have it...
Moonface
Weight Gain
Cataracts - I'm on eye pressure reducing drops
Irritability
Anxiety
Swelling
Insomnia
Indigestion
Acne

And, now HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE! Seriously, it was 148/88 in the left arm and 150/110 in the right. My docs are now debating on tapering the steroids sooner or putting me on blood pressure meds. They now have me on daily Xanax...

I'm MISERABLE. I just want this flare to GO AWAY! It's been off and on for almost a year now, and it's been severe since July.

I could literally just scream...

I had a hypertensive crisis while on prednisone and Entocort. I ended up getting IV treatments to lower my 225/125 BP. Then a taper off both meds over the course of a month. I was miserable. I am so sorry you are going through this. My BP never returned to normal and now I am on two BP meds, once twice a day. Of course, my age likely plays a factor in it being permanently out of whack. I am more than twice your age....

Hi Kaycie I know the pred can be a hard med to handle ,what dose you on now? Have you started your ABT-874 yet? Hang in there it is tough when the sideeffects start building up on the pred. lol gail

Thanks all!  I appreciate it...

Ides - My mom has high blood pressure and always has.  But, my dad is always low, I've always seemed to follow his footsteps.  Seriously, I used to struggle with LOW pressures, not terrible, but it was nothing for me to be 90/50.  So, this is REALLY high for me.... I hate to hear that you are on meds lifelong, but yet, I do understand that and I'm not opposed to another pill, I just don't want to struggle with it.  I see my mom struggle with it, as it is.... So sorry you are battling this too.  It IS miserable.  I just feel awful and the Xanax and Celexa and being in a moderate-severe flare.. I'm just extremely exhausted and miserable.  And, I have to continue working...so that makes it tough...especially when I have a vibrant 16 month old.  Of course, she gets me out of bed on the bad days, so she really is a blessing.

Gail - I'm not seeing any relief from the ABT-874.  I need to update my siggy.  There's a chance I'm getting a low dose or the placebo tho.  After 6 more weeks, I'll be able to KNOW I'm getting the drug.  Of course, being in a severe flare, it could take a few months of meds to get me out of it too, ya know?  I'm on 30mg of Pred, which honestly isn't high for me.   I've been on 60mg before, but I've never been on Pred THIS LONG.  And, I think that's the factor this time.  I was on it for about 5 1/2 months last time total, and this time, I've been on 30-40mg almost the entire time, whereas last time I ranged from 20-60mg and was tapered off pretty quickly.  But, I am PETRIFIED to go anything less then 25mg because that was when I flared up severely last time and almost got myself another trip to the hospital, but in the same token, it may be time to try something different with the blood pressures creeping up and a host of other issues.

I'm just frustrated... I've put SO much on the backburner for the last 6 months and I'm ready to start feeling better and to start getting on with things.  I can handle the 4-8 bathroom trips daily...even the moderate pain... but all the other health issues toppled on this are just starting to magnify everything else.

Thanks for listening...

Kaycie I don't get it as to why they put some on the placebo ,I don't understand why they do that .Did they tell you why? I had high blood pressure years ago due to the birth control pill and never went on it again. How's your weight, that can effect the blood pressure. Seems your like a pickle between two pieces of bread and I know the feeling. Darned one way or the other. Maybe that ABT will kick in soon be keeping my fingers crossed for you. I was on the misery pill for 14 months but not high doses. lol gail

Gail - Oh, the weight, well it was fairly normal for me....until the Pred. In fact, I had started to shed all the extra pounds and then I landed in the hospital, lost 8 lbs in 8 days, then gained that back and then some. I'm at my heaviest, so it is NOT helping the weight, but I'm so severely swollen FROM the steroids, so how do you handle that? It's such a catch 22! I'm also on Yaz (the pill), but I have NEVER EVER had trouble on birth control pills. So, I'm guessing after we talk to the doc on Friday, that we'll HOPEFULLY get off the steroids, and start some blood pressure meds. I really truly need to be on the pill because I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and I can develop pretty dangerous cysts over time if I'm not on the pill.

Once I get off the Pred, I'm hoping to shed this weight. I think my family doc is even going to help me through this one. I actually believe my insurance now covers a dietitian and with blood pressure issues, Crohn's, likely sugar issues now too, and PCOS...I'm hoping it's covered. I really need some help on eating. I am usually SUCH a good eater... I eat lots of healthy foods, but the Pred has caused me to seriously snack...and now I'm trying to avoid lots of salt, which is hard...

The pressures are any better today by the way. still in the 140/80-90s that is SO very high for me...

Hi Kaycie yah that salt is a not so good thing when taking pred. I had to go suarless cookies and snack on crackers without salt. I wander about a fluid pill would help reduce that bloating but not sure if others here have tried it. I would think he will reduce your pred. .Let us know what he says .lol gail

Hey, don't feel so bad. You can work on regulating that with the pred. My mom was on high doses and she got diabetes as well as high blood pressure. She's already got osteoporosis and is overweight.
27/f/CD. 4 CD related surgeries: 2 resections, 2 JP drains, 3 NG tubes, many absesses (including the one my most recent surgery scraped off my ovary) and fistulas.
Currently trying to figure out hip and knee joint pain.
Have lost in these surgeries: appendix, 8 in. intestine, R fallopian tube, gallbladder, 10 in. intestine
Dx'd: February 2008.
Pentasa (and much mental screaming)

Hi Kaycie,

I have always had good blood pressure until recently.  I had my first Remicade infusion two weeks ago and my BP was up then I had the 2nd on Wed, and my BP was even higher.  I decided to call my Internist and I saw her today and my BP was even higher!  Anyhow, she put me on a blood pressure pill which also includes something to help reduce my water weight gain.

She believes the prednisone, along with my weight gain and water retention, are to blame for the BP problem.  She told me to go ahead and get off the pred (I have been on it nearly solid for almost a year now) and if the GI gets upset, to explain that she advised me to get off.

It is so hard!  I have eye inflammation from Crohn's that is soooo painful and prednisone is the only thing that has helped!  If it flares, I will probably have to manage the pain because I honestly think the prednisone is starting to really hurt my body.  sad

I hope you are able to get your pressures back to normal soon.  I am hoping mine get back to normal sometime soon as well!  Keep us updated!

Hi Kaycie, Pred is great but it also sucks bigtime. I can remember my pressure being up when I was on the med. I could feel the ticker just a pounding at times. I was infused once with Remicade and now have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. I was wondering, can these 2 meds cause you to get and keep high blood pressure? They say its genetic because my fathers side has problems with heart disease.

I'm so sorry....the side effects really can be so awful...I remember shaking uncontrollably on days I forgot to eat because of what it did to my blood sugar and then explaining in tears to my lab TA that I probably wouldn't be able to do the lab that day.
Just hang in there...I've been on it since May and things have gotten better on and off. I'm sure you'll find respite in something soon...has your doctor recommended any other medication that might assist in achieving remission??? I hate to hear you're going through this...
