I am currently taking Imuran (azathioprine) but am having some CRAZY hair loss.  smhair I spoke with my doctor once about the issue and he upped my dosage.  I was a little confused why he would do that but I decided to trust and go ahead.  (hoping that he knows best)  It has been 2 weeks and I am headed back into get my regular blood work done. NOt much has changed.  sad   I still am loosing hair and my stomach has been pretty upset.  I want to ask about changing drugs but I am not sure of the difference between azathioprine (imuran) and mercatopurine (6mp).  confused
ANy advice on the drugs?
ANy advice on a different drug that I can research?

Thanks

When imuran breaks down it turns into 6mp. Strange that he would up it if you were not happy with the side effects....sorry I don't have any advice.

I have had hair loss with the Imuran too and I am on 100 mgs. I take a multivitamin and bioton (a b vitamin supplement) to help with new growth. It takes a while but I have lots of new hair after sticking with it. And I get a double doozie because I also have hypothyroidism. Also, for the nausea, I always drink a Carnation Instant Breakfast made with skim milk to wash down all the meds and then go straight to bed. Taking it at night has been helpful for me personally. I find it helps alot with the queasiness caused by all those drugs. I encourage you to stick with the Imuran if it helps with your symptoms. It takes a few months to really work well but many people have had success with it. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I was on Imuran last fall and losing hair by the handful.  It stopped when I started taking folic acid suppliments.  The one I chose has 800 mcg of folic acid and 25 mcg of B12.

It doesn't make sense that your doctor upped the dosage as a response to hair loss.  It's more likely that he ignored your concern and upped the dosage in spite of it.  I know my GI had no interest or sympathy for my concern about the hair loss.  His attitude was "Whatever.  Take your meds."  In the total scheme of my health, the hair loss was a pretty minor issue, so I tried not to let it upset me too much.  But that's pretty demoralizing, to wash your hair every morning and feel like half of it's come away in your hands.

I don't know if it can be attributed to any one med, but my hair went from no gray to about 30% gray in the last year.  And in the last 3 or 4 months it went from straight with a little bit of wave to spiral curls.  It's the weirdest thing.  My hair was curly-ish when I was a baby, but nothing like this.  I switched from Imuran to methotrexate in July, and I'm wondering if it will go straight again when I go off the methotrexate.  (Hopefully sometime this month.)  Now that I've gotten used to it, I kind of like the curls, and I'm hoping they stay.

Twins, I was started out on 50 mg of Imuran and then increased to 100mg. I don't anyone that has been left at the intial 50 mg dose. Do get some folic acid and start on it, it will help with the hair loss. It usually takes Imuran about 3 months for it to really kick in and work. I don't know how long you have been on it. I have been on it 5 yrs now.

My gi instructs all of his patients to take their Imuran at bedtime because of the potential of it causing nausea. So, do switch and take it at bedtime. This should give you some help. I had hair loss when I was on Asacol. I have not noticed anything with the Imuran.

Hang in there. Susie

I must agree that in the grand scheme of things... hair loss is not (or should not) be on the top of my list. Bktold- You said it well.. it is demoralizing. On one level a feel very vain because this worrys me, but on another level I feel like it is a dignity issue.

I don't have much tolerance for a feeling that a doctor might be ignoring me or my issues. I will be chatting with him over the next couple of days, so we will see.
Thanks for the advice!

Wow how is that straydog has been beating me to asnwering posts, no fair, taking my answers! Folic acid is a great idea when your losing hair like that. I was actually even losing EYE BROWS! can you imagine?

They are pretty much the same drug, although I am not sure if imuran quite breaks down TO 6mp, it is most likely atleast something close to that.
