Imuran is one of those nice drugs.....You don't need to taper.   Good luck!  ;)

Really? That could be good news.. Anyone have experience just stopping the use of Imuran? I am so nervous to make any changes with my meds in fear of a potential flare..

Many women on this board have had babies while on Imuran, 6mp, Remicade and Humira. Why stop the medication? A healthy Mom produces a healthy baby. I think you really need to rethink stopping your medication, you could flare and that would put a crimp in your baby plans.
Been living with Crohn's Disease for 33 years.  Currently on Asacol, Prilosec, Estrace, Prinivil, Diltiazem, Percoset prn for pain, Zofran, Phenergan, Probiotics, and Calcium.  Resections in 2002 and 2005.  Also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis. Currently my Crohns is in remission.

I dropped Imuran with no taper...and felt much better within a day or two! However, I had started Humira when I dropped it, so I wasn't worried about a flare.

I hated Imuran. The one good thing about it was that it helped my fistulas. If I missed a dose or two, they would start coming back.

I went off Imuran immediately, with no taper, and onto another med with negative effects.  Of course, I don't think the Imuran was doing much for me.  What do your doctors recommend?

Hello -

I am also looking to get pregnant soon! I just met with a high risk OBGYN from a top hospital and I was told that the Imuran is far safer to take than the original studies indicated. She told me that the benefits far outweigh the risks for my case. In essence, heathy mom = better pregnancy = healthier baby. Crohn's inflammation/flare = unhealthy mom = bad pregnancy = chance of miscarriage and other complications.

Hope this helps - as always, I would advise talking to a few docs before stopping any medication.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes, I stopped imuran without tapering....but I was also on remicade. My liver levels were out of whack and I felt much better once I stopped taking the imuran. I didn't have any problems once I stopped it. I have also stopped it periodically for a few days here and there when I had abscesses drained with no negative effect.

Mine was a very rare deal but I stopped Imuran cold turkey because I was trying LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone). I develpoed posterior Scleritis of the eye and have been fighting it ever since. This summer I had a Gastro say "lots of wierd things happen when you come off Imuran."

As I said this my additional auto immune disease is rare but never the less still there. If I was female; wanting a baby; I would certainly stay on if my doctor agrees.

Retired male in late 60's. Perforated Colon in 92. Diagnosed as Ulcerative Colitis in 93. Uncontrolled flareup in 97 dictated J-pouch surgery. 04 Capsule endoscopy diagnosed as Crohns not UC. Emergency surgery in 05 to remove lodged camera capsule. Biopsies positively diagnosed Crohns at that time. 12/06 Unsucessfully tried Naltrexone(LDN). 2/07 developed scleritis of the eye, tearing and detaching the retina. Treated with high doses of Prednisone. 6/07 Thought eye was healing and started taking Entocort counting on the residual (non-systemic portion) as treating the eye. Wrong. In October eye was not stabilized. 11/07 Started Remicade to try and reduce the ocular inflamation of the Scleritis since I had been requiring more and more Prednisone to keep the eye quiet. 12/07, retina tares and detaches again. Started Remicade every 4 weeks plus 20mg of Prednisone per day. Six months and seven infusions later, good eye is back to 20/14. Bad eye is 20/70. Had cataract surgery on June 05 on bad eye. Eye returned to a correctable visionary level of 20/50. 11/08 had reaction to Remicade; trying to keep going with Imuran and Pred. Need corrective eye surgery and fitted for prism lense to correct that eye from turning out.  Life looks fairly good (literally) today.
Married with 4 grandkids.
