Well after my not so wonderful surgery adventure I was home for 11 days. Then comes pain, nausea, just not feeling good. I go for a CT and I have an abcess that is around the surgical site. So they admit me and try to put a drain in the next day via CT. It really had to be the most painful thing I have had done!! The radiologist tried to put the small bulb type drain in by just freezing the area. OMG it was horendous.!

After much begging they figure out it is not working and they give me some morphene. It was great at slowing my breathing and making me sleepy but not for pain. In the end I did get some pain control but then I had to wait 4 days in hospital with this to try for another drain because it was the weekend.
So after a few days of constant vomitting and fever I go for another try. This time pain meds are on tap and they put in a heftier drain. I now have one that I have to flush out with saline 3 times a day and it drains into a bag I have hanging from my leg.

So everything is going good for a few days and then I start having puss coming out around the drain site in my belly whenever I flush it. I am on Cipro and Flagyl so the dr thinks it will heal up, but we will see. I am going for a CT and meeting the surgeon in 2 days so we will find out then what is happening.
My luck they have to open it up to clean it out.....

I am really starting to wonder if this is ever going to end!!! I have been sick with the last flare since February and my hospital stay began back mid October. I am home now but my stomach hurts to move, I have to sleep in our recliner chair, the smallest little adventures play me out for the day, I just want my life back!!

(((Westat))) Boy have you been thru the ringer. I wish there was something I could say or do that would make you feel better, but I know there's not. I hope no more surgeries are in your future and hope the meds and drain work for you.

Thanks for the encouragement !!! It helps to know that people understand what I am going through.

I have one friend that keeps telling me how good I look. UUUUGGGHHHH. Of course she is telling me this as I am walking around with my cane and a little hunched over, and BIG chubby cheeks that I am totally hating. Of course I am a good 40 pounds lighter than I was not so many months ago.....

Atleast today is better than yesterday. Less pain and nausea.

I have had 2 of those drains put in....the most painful thing I have ever experienced! The morphene does not work and that is what they insisted on both times! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don't think this will get rid of your abscess. They will say that it will (my surgeon stood at the end of my hospital bed and told me that this is just the way that they drain them now), and the ct will eventually show that it is "gone", but my experience has been this. Once the drain was removed, a few weeks later it filled back up and broke through the skin (mine wasn't a deep abscess) and drained, then healed back over. This happened a few times in the matter of about 8 months. Then I got so sick, and in so much pain, that I went to the er. My surgeon wasn't on call, so I got another one (who has been trained at the Cleveland Clinic), which was really a blessing in disguise.

The new surgeon told me that you can't drain abscesses that way, instead you need to go into an operating room, drain the abscess cavity, CLEAN it out, and then leave it open to heal from the inside out. He went in and did that, and I have never had any trouble with that abscess again.

It makes perfect sense if you think about it....the drain that you have in there can in no way get all of the microscopic infection out, so once the drain is pulled, and it seals over again, the abscess is just going to start filling up again.

I wish you the best. And I hope that things start improving!
