Since 2005, after I was first diagnosed with Crohn's and UC, I was put on Asacol and prednisone. Until summer, I did not have regular blood. Now, I am seeing blood regularly in my stools. Is this normal? I was put on Entocort for about 6 weeks in the fall of 2008 and then the pain I had in my stomach went away. Then I was on prednisone for one month, but the blood did not go away. Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated.
27m - Dx January 2005 and given 80mg Prednisone to taper off and 12 tablets of Asacol
Normal medication: 12 tablets of Asacol daily
Right now (which is not working) after bleeding everyday in BMs: Prednisone (30mg to taper off of for 6 weeks, Azathioprine, Controloc, Potassium, Iron, Multi-Vitamin

Not normal, but not uncommon, especially with UC. Bleeding usually indicates ulcerations. The standard advice I have seen, which makes sense, is that onset of blood in the stool, regardless of other symptoms, should be checked by your GI if the bleeding continues for long.

How long is long? Also, do you bleed normally?

I think if you're losing a lot of blood then you do need to see someone about it. I was losing it regularly for a while and ended up needing two blood transfusions. It stopped for a while and has started up again. I was told by my GI to contact him immediately if said event happened. Just keep a close eye on it..

I have been losing blood since July. I had a colonoscopy in September and it was found that my colon was very inflamed. I was put on Entocort and then prednisone, but I still have blood.

Here is a pic of how much blood I get: http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee151/NosHistoriae/IMG_2248.jpg

I have had only one bleeding episode, which led to my diagnosis. If your GI is aware of your persistent bleeding, and if it is notchanging in amount, frequency or type, then you are probably ok to go along until your next routine appointment. However, if it is a new thing in some way -- say more blood, more often or a different color -- I would contact him for an assessment. The scope showed widespread inflammation a couple of months ago, which would surelty be consistent with bleeding. The best rule of thumb for IBD patients seems to be that if there is no major change, don't ring the bell, but if there is a jaor change for the worse, call the doc.

That makes me feel better. How much blood do you get daily? I will try to get another pic in the future.

I don't have any bleeding on a consistent basis -- only once before I started meds. But quite a few UC and CD patients do have regular or intermittent bleeding, and since your scope showed a lot of active disease that is hardly surprising. It's very rarely a medical emergency in IBD unless there is a great deal of blood, faintness, etc. A simple test would be to ask the GI to draw blood and see if your blood levels are ok . . . if so, you are obvously not losing enough to be immediatrely concerned about.

Thanks for the advice. If anyone has any other descriptions of how much blood the lose, please share. I will try to take a pic tomorrow for clarification.

Thanks

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was just in the hospital and had some tests. My doctor said that the blood would be normal just like the sun setting. However, I have a problem with my small intestines or small bowel, because they are contracted.

Hi There,

Did your doctor metion anything to you about hemorrhoids?  I have internal ones and I bleed a whole lot when they act up.  The toilet bowl is completely red after I go sometimes because the bleeding is significant.  I also have bleeding from my crohn's but that is usually a darker red where the hemorrhoids is a very bright red blood.  Also fissures can bleed a lot too.  Good luck to you and I hope you feel better.

Bloody stools was pretty much my own symptom leading up to my diagnosis. I had been having an issue with it for a year or so, not a large amount at all, but my doctor just told me it was hemorrhoids. Then it got really bad and was enough to send me to the ER and get a colonoscopy, where they found inflammation in my ileum which led to a Crohn's diagnosis. I was put on prednisone right away and that cleared it up a bit, however I was one of the few percent who gets worse when they start Asacol. Generally bleeding, aside from pain/nausea, is my only symptom of a flare, so even a little bit of blood is enough for me to call a doc, since it's probably a sign of a flare. So for me, while blood is technically normal it's also the sign of ongoing inflammation and definitely puts me on alert.

Hope you start feeling better!

The blood is usually with the stool. Sometimes I just go to the washroom and have blood come out. I did not have any significant bowel movement today. So, I could not get a picture. I will try to get a picture tomorrow. I believe I remember reading that for UC and Crohn's, it is normal to have blood. However, I am not sure. Right now, I do not have any pains, diarrhea, or anything other than blood. The blood is the only problem.

I hope you guys can help me in the future (tomorrow or this week), because I am not going to see another until about 2 weeks from now. The one doctor who I talked with here recommended seeing a surgeon so he could see the results of my tests.

Does your GI say that it will be like that all the time or is this just something you got recently? How do you cope with the blood loss? Lots of iron? I was given 2 tablets of iron a day. I was just put on it. When I was recently in the hospital, I was given an IV with iron in it. It was dark brown.

I bleed a lot when I am sick (I have UC). But if you are not having any other symptoms then you shouldn't be bleeding I don't think. I don't have any blood unless I am flaring but when I am flaring I have a lot of blood. One thing my doctor always says is that blood always looks like more in the toliet because it colours the water.

They can do a simple blood test to see if you are losing too much blood.
