I was just reading Bible's thread about her pain meds and it got me to wondering:

WHAT IS EVERYONE'S PAIN LIKE?

I'm guessing my Crohn's is not at a level right now that pain meds are needed.  I sometimes have trapped gas pains...maybe like contraction feelings?  But it's nothing it would take pain meds for.  Otherwise, I don't really have what I'd consider "pain".

So I'm curious to know for those of you who have pain and/or have a worse case of Crohn's than I do and are on pain medications for it, what are you feeling?  Where is the pain?  All over?  Localized to the intestines?  How would YOU describe it?  Knife stabbing?   Cramps?  Bloating?  Contractions?  Dull ache?

Pain is so different for everyone...so my curiosity is getting the best of me.  I want to know what people with REAL pain are dealing with...so I can be more empathetic as well as recognize it if/when it happens to me.
Diagnosed in October, 2004 at age 32.

Previous/occasional Rx's: 20mg Prednisone taper, Flagyl, Levaquin

Take all of your descriptions and that sounds right to me and I take ultracet as needed. The pain isn't just in the abdominal regions however. It's basically everywhere else depending on some factor unbeknownst to me thus far but temporally dependent.
20 years old, Diagnosed with moderate to severe Crohn's and Colitis in May of 2008.
Currently taking:
Prednisone(down to 10 mg), pentasa, bentyl as needed, prilosec, tandem plus, humira, and good probiotics
Surgery for ectopic pregnancy most likely the result of severe Crohn's inflammation in July of 2008.

I get abdominal pain, dull, stabbing, you name it. I don't notice it most of the time, I think I have become accustomed to it. The worst pain I get however is joint pain all over my body.

I get tummy pains. Pains during sex (if there's expanded inflammation). Pain in my hemmie. The joint/muscle/pains are awful. The worst really is my hand. If you could imagine a raw nerve and exposing it to air which hurts it and then taking a burning match and touching said raw nerve in tempo with my heartbeat. can't touch the pad of the thumb 'cause of it. It beats and burns with my heartbeat. My hips and back kill me too. How to explain it. So constant you want to scream 'cause it makes you feel like you're crazy. It's a dull consistent throbbing from the joint out at the hips. Soreness in ankles and knees, upper back, neck. The worst tummy pain for me is the backache that comes when I need to go as well as if I eat something very gassy. That can hurt, you can feel it traveling through the guts, and its embarrassing.
27/f/CD. 4 CD related surgeries: 2 resections, 2 JP drains, 3 NG tubes, many absesses (including the one my most recent surgery scraped off my ovary) and fistulas.
Currently trying to figure out hip and knee joint pain.
Have lost in these surgeries: appendix, 8 in. intestine, R fallopian tube, gallbladder, 10 in. intestine
Crohns Dx'd: February 2008.
Pentasa (and much mental screaming)

Trying to hang in there until January so I'll have some insurance and can visit a rheumy, neuro, GI, primary, pain control, and possibly a shrink so I could stop crying and living in my own lil pity party. :-P

To be honest, even when my flares are at their worst (tons of D, blood, mucus, which thankfully hasn't been like that in quite some time now but still flaring to some degree) I never had gut pain, but instead intense lower back pain everytime I was on the toilet and it would put me in tears it hurt so bad...as much as the lower back pain is horrid I'm so thankful that tummy pains are not the norm for me.

:)
My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

I don't have so much tummy pain as I do joint pain. Sometimes that is worse than the tummy pain. And the joint pain is the reason I take my pain meds.

some tummy pain, left side in particular concentrated in one spot. Also pressure pain in my rear, sometimes takes a loooong time to find a comfortable way to sit. Joint pain in knees, lower back pain, headaches and major fatigue. I try to stay away from pain meds when i can but also won't allow myself to suffer. Tylenol or T3's do the trick usually, hot baths help the back/bum pain.

Dear Kittikatt, I have had abdominal pain since I was around 8 or 9 years old, finally dx in 2004 or 2005        I have had intense abd. pain cramping sometimes dull severe ache, back and body wide pain, very tired, have had multiple surgeries and have many of the "side effects" of both the disease ie hydranittis skin, artherititis, and medication problems, also big problems with  severe adhesions, now permenantly on pain meds through pain clinic, and the ususal medications for the disease.  Pain has always been a problem with mine even when things are calm.  All my docs think this is because of adhesions-  Good luck God bless us all-mike

when i was flaring really bad the pain felt like someone took my intestines, chopped them up, beat on them, and then put the back into my body...yeah it sounds disgusting and painful, but honestly thats what it felt like lol..i often described it as being bruised really badly (and i mean really badly!!)...it was the worst pain i have ever experienced and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! nothing i would do would get rid of the pain...when i finally went to the hospital they gave me dilaudid and that did the trick!...now i only occasionally get that pain (not all the time like a few months ago, thank god!)...but i also get stabbing pains on both my left and right side once in a while...and stabbing pains in my well ummm butt lol...i take loratab or tylenol 3 when it gets bad...

Horrible bloating and trapped gas are my main problems these days. It feels very much like labor pains, and it is always bad in the late afternoon and early evening. Nothing seems to help; it just takes time to get it expelled. Needless to say, it has really ruined my social life. confused

nruth has your doctors checked you for a stricture? Sure sounds like you have one with the description of your pain.

All of the above. I usually describe it as having gastric flu every day, and the regular flu, just to add insult, to my situation...

Other than that, not so bad (smile)

I have had pain that has knocked me to my knees, but when it gets like that, thats when my daughter calls for an ambulance. Apart from that I often have abdominal pain and travels from left side to right side, hard to describe really but it hurts a lot. I guess my pain threshold is pretty good because I recently went off all pain meds to try and grin and bare it on my own. I feel im popping enough pills as it is without adding more to the list, plus the pain meds made me feel so doped up that i could barely function. take care
