I was diagnosed with a C-Diff infection in early Oct which I took antibiotics for. The doc told me it is a strong possibility it would come back in 2 months because it is hard to kill. I started having some symptoms of it a week ago and took a second round of antibiotics. I searched aabout C-Diff today and it seems that it is a very sreious infection...That worries me is it overhyped or what? I feel pretty good...I have had diahrea but only once or twice a day and it isnt nearly as horrible ast the first time...no severe cramps...no blood...but is this another disease on top of crohns that I am not aware of????

so many times...LOL
It is serious, but it sounds like you are doing ok...
Cipro and Flagyl are used to treat it, but I would also do at least a yogert a day.

Doc, I would also ask your doctor about supplementing with a beneficial probiotic called Saccharomyces boulardii. If you google it and read Wiki's explanation, it say it is used to help fight a C.diff infection. Check w/you doctor--I think the brand name doctors use is Florastor.

Back in February when my GI doc first began conducting tests to determine what was wrong with me, he discovered a c. diff infection. I was put on Flagyl and Florastor to combat it. I thought that being put on Florastor was an enlightening touch. The regimen cleared me of the infection and as far as I know it hasn't returned since. My doctor always has the lab test for c. diff whenever he sends me in for bloodwork.

flagyl is the treatment, along with probiotics to help restore your natural gut flora. cipro is used for other bacterial infections of the gut, but not for cdif. sometimes they use oral vancomycin. it is the pits, isn't it?

c-diff tripped crohn's for me. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks, flagyl and vanco via iv in the hosp then oral for 6 weeks after. I took florastor for about 1 year after that and i've had no recurrances since. It's a nasty bug!

I have been taking the flagyl for almost two weeks and the cramps have gone pretty much, but I have developed a stricture...I have had problems with strictures off and on...never too too bad but the past 5 years have been annoying. My cold has subsided, my energy is pretty good, and if I was having normal bm's I would be dancing in the street. But since I feel blocked or I guess know that I am somewhat blocked it nags at my mind and worries me a little.

Last night I had a bm and it started as D then moved on to solid then formed narrow but formed stool...took a while to push it out lol...then this am nothing but about 2 tablespoons of liquid D. My tummy feels tight but no cramps or anything and no pain so to speek. I had a SCD yogurt smoothie for breakfast. Those smoothies always jump start my day.

I havent taken 6mp in 2 months...I have been contemplating starting it again. But I dont know if its worth it...I have so much more energy now then before...This is my first flare since being on SCD and it is not that bad.I just dont know what to do to come out of it...

Consider Florastor and the intro diet. Or a liquid diet (something like that Absorb Plus and chicken broth) but I would definitely add the Florastor. Help keep that awful C.diff from coming back! Just a suggestion!

I have been taking the acidophilis probiotics that are SCD legal. Along with the yogurt...I wasnt eating the yogurt every day so I started teh acodiphilis.
Is that just as good as the Florastor?

No. Not for C. diff.

Doc, different strains of probiotics do different things in your gut. Acidophilus is wonderful and you need it because you are on antibiotics AND you have Crohn's. You want to constantly introduce the good bacteria to crowd out the bad. Take it for the rest of your life.

Florastor is one--and only one--strain of a DIFFERENT probiotic. This strain is NOT in your acidophilus probiotic. It is important because it has been PROVEN to help fight C. diff infections. I would take it and STAY on it for months to come (6-12?)--until you're sure your C. diff will not return. If you have insurance, your doctor may be able to write a prescription for Florastor--I'm not sure. If so, it might not cost much at all. If you don't have insurance that will cover it, you can go to your local health food store and request a probiotic with the SAME EXACT STRAIN as Florastor: Saccharomyces boulardii. If it were me, I would just pick up the phone, call my GI's office and ask. It never hurts to ask.

Take them both! smilewinkgrin

I had c-diff once and it threw me into flare.

Anytime I take antibiotics, I supplement with Florastor.  It's worked wonders for me.  Walmart Pharmacy can order it and so can CVS.  The large bottle, which is 40 or 50 pills, is about $38 locally.  I usually take it 2x/day and then drop to 1x after about 10 days of the antibiotic being completed.  I really let my gut dictate when I stop taking it.

I had a really bad flare-up last year that landed me in the hospital for 3 weeks. I went it with a partial obstruction and then developed c-difficile or had that before I went in I am not sure. I was on Flagyl, around the clock pain medicine, Florastor and Vancomyocin orally> I was on the Vancomyocin for two weeks after I got out also.. I took the Florastor for about 6 months just to make sure it didnt return. I remember all of the doctors, nurses etc.. putting gloves on and paper things over their clothes, etc.. They said it was very contagious.. I had never had that before in over 20 years of having Crohns and numerous hospital stays and flare-ups..I would get checked again to make sure if you have it again or not just to be safe.
