Do any of you guys withhold your bowel movements when you're stressed? And then when you're calm and feel happy and non-anxious if feels like they're going to slide out of you, almost with urgency?

If so, how do you handle this?

Please Helllllp!

To Specify, meaning that you want to make a bowel movement, feel like you have to but can't...

Hi One thing I learned from having had IBS too is that to go to the bathroom as soon as you feel you need to go ,it helps with keeping the pain away to .I know there are times when we cain't get to the bathroom right away but it helps to go as soon as you can ,when near one. I used to wait when I was busy but have learned that it works .lol gail

I couldn't hold a bowel movement if my life depended on it and mine are generally well formed and I still cannot hold them...I always thought that if I didn't have D but solid ones instead that I'd be able to finally hold them but unfortunatly because of this stupid disease it doesn't work that way (for me anyways).

I used to but I really can't see any benefit to it now. Plus, I generally feel more relief if I just listen to my body. I can't 'hold it' for much anymore either. I'm just too afraid I won't make it in time and/or it will damage something. I did try imodium before and it seems to help if you're afraid of being out and locating a restroom in time.

True, if you are able to hold it and make a habit of it then it can causes constipation.

Hey guys, thanks...it's true, I have noticed that when I go to the bathroom right away when I feel it, it really helps with the constipation...but what I realize I do is get anxious about actually going around people ect and then I hold it until I then relax or something and then I have to go so badly that it's almost like incontinence. I think that I hold it because it's in reaction to the pain, my muscles just tighten up...it sucks...because it seems that it's either diarreah or I'm holding it, not much in the middle. And it's hard because I think I would have much less of a problem if I could just go all the time...I really think it's anxiety :( Do anxiety meds help with that kinda thing you think? Because it's not like the muscles aren't working, it's when I sit down to go I feel myself clenching and not letting it come out... :(
