Does anyone know if dark stools can indicate bleeding, or do they have to be black?  Today I had dark stools - not black -, maybe a bit tarry but not too bad.  I've had black tarry stools before and I know that means bleeding, but can dark stools indicate some bleeding or only if they are black?

I'm pretty sure they have to be black in order to indicate blood, I usually have very dark brown colored stool and I haven't had bleeding in ages now.

Merry Christmas!!!

Thanks guys. Current hemoglobin is 11.5 and I get blood work in 2 weeks so I'll know for sure at that time, hopefully it starts ticking upwards.

Are you currently taking Iron supplements?

That will definitely turn your stool very dark

Take care

No, but I did have some blueberries. Perhaps that's what it was.
