Some of you have asked for an update on my daughter, Marie.  To refresh you, she was recently dx with IBD (Crohn's) (on 12/22/08).  Biopsies confirmed Crohn's in her esophagus, stomach, large intestine, rectum, and what they could see of the small intestine.  She was put on oral prednisone, 40MG.

She has been treated by 2 doctors as one is on vacation because of the holidays. The 2 doctors have opposing ideas on how to treat her, one suggested she come home with oral pred.  The other suggested we stay at the hospital and she have IV meds.  She doesn't seem to be improving at home and it has been over a week.  She hasn't gained any weight, still 77-78# (she is almost 15 years old .  She still is very weak and joints hurt.

So.....  Tomorrow we are admitting her to get her IV meds.  I agree with the doc that thought she wouldn't be able to absorb the meds orally.

Thanks so much to all of you who have shared your stories, insight, helpful websites (which I have visited), and thoughts and prayers.  I truly believe in the healing power or prayers when we do all we can to help ourselves.

Happy New Year  and God Bless, yeah
Jennifer

Oh I am so glad you are going with the doctor who recommends hospitalization. At least there she can get the meds and hydration she needs to get back on the road to recovery. It really helps me alot when I am really sick to have the meds they provide via IV. Sometimes we are just too sick to absorb the oral meds. Give her a big hug from us and let her know we are praying for her.

Hugs and Happy New Year to you to!!!

Hi Jennifer,

The IV Prednisone does apparently work faster and more efficiently. It's probably the best thing to do. They will likely give her and IV antacid too, (Rantidine, sp.). Ask the Doctor about the dosage, as IV Prednisone is actually stronger at the same dose. 40mgs IV, is equivalent to 50mgs of Oral. I just found this out recently myself.

Please keep posting updates. As I said earlier, there is a wealth of knowledge here. Prayers coming your way.

Tom.

My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Initially, 9 weeks of Prednisone, currently taking 2000mgs of Pentasa.

Tom,

I am so encouraged that your daughter is only on Pentasa.  That is all I take too, unless I have a flare up I can't recoup from alone adn then will use prednisone.  I hear so many on this site that use so many meds and I am not a medicine person. Though I am know they don't use it unless completely necessary.  Want to go easy on my kidneys, you know.  I hope and pray that my daughter will be able to heal enough to not need much.

Thanks, God Bless, and Happy New Year.  God Bless Your daughter too!!  May she stay in good health (as good as it gets with IBD)  :) smilewinkgrin

Jennifer I am much like you. I only take Asacol for my Crohns and Pred when I flare. Hopefully, after your girl gets this flare under control she will be able to be maintained on a mild drug like one of the 5 ASA's too. Good luck!

Thanks Jennifer

I really appreciate your concern. Hopefully, your daughter will do fine on one of the 5ASA's, as Nanners stated. Unfortunately, for mine, she'll have to move up to an immunosuppressant, (Imuran). Another week on the IV and you should start seeing some improvement. Keep posting her progress.
