hi everyone

I hope you are all well. At the moment I am not doing so good, in a lot of pain with my fistula, which was originally an abscess and landed me in hospital for a week, and seems to be abscessed-over again *dread*. I have been prescribed colifoam enemas and was just wondering if anyone else has used these steroid enemas before to reduce inflammation down there, and if so if you found them useful. Any side effects? I’m trying not to think too much about the long term problem of this fistula, because it doesn’t seem to want to heal on its own at the moment, but I cant think of the possibility of so much pain again, because it makes me cry.

I hope you’re all having a great 2009 so far

P

Good morning! I use Hydrocortisone enemas as needed for inflammation/stricture. I have virtually no side-effects from them, and they do help me. The only thing I find is sometimes they are hard to hold in, especially if my bowels are over active. I've never used the foam before, which I hear works well. I always place my enema bottle in warm water for about 5 minutes. It makes it feel more comfortable. Also, make sure you administer it slowly, otherwise you may get some cramping/gas. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck! Blessings, Julie:-)

Hey Phoebe,
Ive been using colifoam now for some time and have no side effects from it, I have found it does ease some of the pain and slows down the bleeding. Good luck with it and keep us posted

I've always used cortifoam steroid foam enema with no issues or a single side effect and I've been on it for as long as one yr BEFORE tapering off of it with no issues at all...because of it being used rectally and not orally it doesn't get into your bloodstream the way oral steroids do.

They generally work fast but of course it depends on how severe your inflammation is.

Yes, I'm another Colifoam user. I found it hurt like billy-o when I was sick, and it was only when I was starting to get better that I started to have no problems with it.

Even though they *say* to do it before bed, I found that the pain would be intense enough that I wouldn't sleep if I followed that advice, so, when I was at my worst, I'd do the enema at about 4pm and then sit still until the pain passed. That way, I would have *some* chance to get some sleep.

I hope you're one of the lucky people who can use it without pain and that you start to feel better soon.

It did hurt the first couple of times I used it, it stung like hell, and I was wondering why, but recently it hasn't been hurting so much, which is a relief. Maybe it's already working? I've only been on it for a few days. And I have been on painkillers for my fistula/abscess, the only way I can have a semi-normal existence whilst living with these things.

How have you been Ivy? Isn't this brisbane weather killing you? I was in the city today and it was SO HOT AND SWEATY!! I did some temping work and took the bus home (i usually drive) - and felt like i needed a shower when i got home it was so smelly and sticky!

Bwahahaha. Summer hasn't even hit down here, Phoebe. It's about 18C with vivid blue skies and it's *lovely* weather for curling up under a tree with a book. I feel sorry for you - humidity is so hard to cope with - but am thrilled that you're able to get some temping work!

I hope the foam is working, Phoebe. It sounds as though it might be.
