Was wondering how many immodiums people take a day for D. My dr suggested taking Metamucil with a SMALL amount of water so it would have the "binding" effect on me. THe dr said to do this 3x a day plus the immodium.

Just wanted to get everybody's opinion on this and what your dosage is in a typical day.

Has immodium not been working as well when it used to?

Hopefully Pb4 will be along soon. I know she is using a fiber supplement with alot of success. Good luck!

At my last visit my Dr told me I could take Immodium to help slow things up while flaring. It's been a God send. I went from 15+ BM a day to around 4 or 5. But that could have to do with him lowering my Prednisone as well. But anyway, he told me I could take it with no problem.

Edit: When I take it, I take 1 in the morning. That usually works for me all day.

Hi, yes as Nanners mentioned I use a fibre supplement daily as directed by my GI and it was the best advice I've ever gotten from a doc...it's been about 5 yrs now and I haven't missed a night (I take it before bed cuz it's most convenient for me) but I take pill form which you have to take plenty of water with so it doesn't expand in the esophagus...it has helped a lot in conjunction with probiotics, bee propolis, vitamins A, C-calcium ascorbate and omegas 3-6-9.

I've never been told to use immodium and I never have...with the fibre supplements you should expect some excess gas/bloating this is normal and it will go away once your system adjusts to it (took me 3 months but well worth it) my GI said to take it indefinitely which I plan to. Everyone's results vary of course but give it a fair chance with fibre supplements, it could take 6 months or longer for you to see results, or less time than that, just be sure you do not increase the fibre until you've passed the adjustment period.

Good luck :)

Thank you PB4! Question: what kind do you take? Did it start causing more D at first for you before it started to help things? I take two immodium in the mornings and it helps somedays and other days it does nothing. When I do have formed BM I still have trouble with frequency (seem to go a lot, and EVERY time I eat something). I guess there is nothing we can do for that huh? I will try the fibre supplements but if you have a specific kind that you want to recommend to me feel free! Thanks again

I take three heaping tablespoonfuls of the sugar sweetened Metamucil everyday. If you opt for the sugar-free Metamucil, the equivalent dose would be three heaping TEAspoonfuls.

SOLUBLE fiber and prednisone have been *the* two most effective things in helping control my CD. Immodium helps when I need immediate relief from cramps, but it takes a huge dose to work for me.

Your GI will probably tell you that any of the SOLUBLE fiber supplements will help, but after experimenting with all of them, I've found nothing beats psyllium powder (Metamucil). The cellulose based supplements just don't seem to work as well, at least for me. Also, the capsule based psyllium supplements don't seem to get thoroughly hydrated with water; excuse the graphic explanation, but I can always tell when they come up to bat: big clumpy floaters. I don't have that problem with the powder based psyllium.

INsoluble fiber is the devil for most Crohnies. YMMV, but for the most part, the breakfast cereals that say "great source of fiber!" mean great source of INsoluble fiber, which means much grief.

One last soluble fiber tip: don't take medications with it. It prevents alot of meds from being absorbed correctly. Take your meds either an hour before your fiber supplement, or two hours after.

I've been on soluble fiber for the last five years. It's been a god send for me.

Entocort 9 mg/day, Prednisone 20 mg/day, started Humira 1/22/08, started 100 mg of Azasan (Imuran) 2/20/08. Increased Azasan to 150 mg 10/15/08. Discontinued Humira 11/03/08 after extreme fatigue and moderate muscle aches. Started Cimzia 12/4/08. Down to 5 mg/day of Pred now, and will continue to taper until completely off as long as the other meds keep me off the porcelain.

I'm convinced that Prednisone is the root of all evil, and primarily responsible for global warming.

Hi LauryLu, I use a fibre supplement called Prodiem stool bulker (it has a very mild laxative in it to prevent constipation) it's very similar to metamucil...psyllium is the key ingredient.  Fibre aids with both D and C...I'm not 100% with my symptoms but I'm a lot better, keeping in mind that I do use it in combination with the things I mentioned in my previous reply...as far as having to "go" a lot after you've eaten, you may want to consider cutting your portions down, eat smaller amounts per sitting and instead increasing the amount of times you eat a day so you're still getting the same amount of food, the more food you eat in one sitting the more work it is for your digestive system...some also do well with adding a digestive enzyme taken after every meal to help digest your food...natural digestive enzymes are in the form of kiwi, papaya, pineapple, mango so if you can tolerate eating those then try them rather than the supplements, if not, many have success with the supplement form of digestive enzymes.
