I don't think that there's a simple answer for this--yet. I know VSL#3 has been through clinical trails for folks with UC... it has many different genus(?) and species of beneficial bacteria in it, so I think it would be next to impossible to determine which were the most effective. However, somebody--some experts--had to determine what is "beneficial", so I guess it comes down to trusting that they know what that is. Also, understanding that it may be an individual experience, as well.

That said, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the genus "Lactobacillus" is a very safe and beneficial place to start. Lactobacillus has (according to Wiki) 125 species, probably the most common ones you hear about are L. acidophilus, L. salivarius, and L. reuteri. If you care to read about Lactobacillus on Wiki, you'll get a general overview.

Western medicine has only JUST begun to study the benefits of probiotics. I think much more information will be forthcoming. I just wish they weren't adding them into sugar laden, processed JUNK FOOD!!! Isn't is just like us (modern society) to KILL everything beneficial (pasteurization) only to attempt to figure out what SHOULD be there and add it back in later... shakehead ...with sugar and other junk, of course.

Hope this helps a bit, Jid!

I wouldn't be able to survive antibiotics without Florastor. I keep a bottle on hand at all times.

I get by with a lotta help from my friends!
Crohn's DG 2003 , symptoms included terrible joint and soft tissue pain, just met first cousin who suffers from Reactive Arthritis-explains sooo much.
Followed SCD Strictly 2003-06, then modified by adding new things 10-12 days apart to avoid delayed reactions in the form of arthritis symptoms. Scope on 2-5-09 was great! Doc says no symptoms,No scope for 10 years!!!

Sheri,
I had a beautiful older sister named Sheri, who we lost at a very young age and I have not seen the spelling very often, so I love your name and the spelling.
Yes, the SCD is the diet from the Breaking the Vicious Cycle Book. I lived on a lot of whole foods, meats, fruits, and veges. I ate a good deal of fiber, even when it caused pain (I slowed fiber and meats when I saw bleeding). My greatest fear after seeing my first scope (everything was jaundiced, yellowed and looked like someone started a weed-eater in there) was that my gut would scar and form a blockage, and many people helped me monitor myself, including a Doctor friend. They would not use most Crohn's drugs due to allergies and other issues. I used Asacol for a short time, then stopped after becoming symptom free for a time in hopes it would still work if I needed it in the future. This time when I chose to have my scope it was right after the holiday season, and my diet was kinda crappy all last year. I was a little afraid of what we would see, and I'm ecstatic with the results after trashing my diet for a full year prior. The diet is very difficult, not for everybody, and if I had had any choices, it would have been the last thing I would or could have done. My nephew was DG'd at 3 years old, has had 3 surgeries, been crippled off an on for a good part of his life, and swears a good deal of it could have been avoided, had he known about the SCD sooner.
There is SCD info in the resources (above right), and I will send you links to recipies if you want to know of what we eat, of want more info.
