Hello all. In October I started Methotrexate. Previously I had joint pains in my knees but never thought anything of it. I stopped taking it in the middle of January because of lack of effectiveness. 1 week after stopping the medication I started getting pains in my left wrist, elbow and knee. Since then it has moved to both of my knees, my ankles, wrists, and now my hips. It's getting to the point where I am in so much pain just lifting my 11 month old daughter. I have a doctors appointment this coming week and hope to find out if this is arthritis or what the heck it is. I am not taking any pain killers or meds at the moment. I am waiting on remicade and hope to get it soon because I am in major flare. Grrrrrrr. All the pain is really getting to me and I just want it to go away.

MTX is sometimes given to treat inflammatiry arthritis. Many with Rheumatoid Arthritis and some with Ankylosing Spondylitis use this medication to treat the inflammation. So it stands to reason that if you have arthritis related to your inflammatory bowel disease, stopping the MTX could/would cause a return of arthritis symtpoms. Glad you have a doctor's appointment this week. A person should not have to live with the type of pain your are having.

I had crippling arthritis associated with Crohn's for many years. I learned to just live with it until my doctor recommended Remicade. It has changed my life!!! Before the Remicade I couldn't even get to mail box many days, now I'm back in the gym almost every day working out with weights and 30 minutes on an eliptical machine. I never dreamed I would ever be able to do that again. I hope you get similar results.

Crohns 30 years. Ileostomy for 15 years. Symptom free for 14 years until 6 months ago. Now on Remicade and iron. Feeling like a champ!
God Bless. Tony

By the way, I had arthritis in all the same areas. it even progressed into my fingers and toes. My whole frame was affected. I have to admit though, the Remicade hasn't been as effective on my Crohn' symptoms as it has the arthritis but I still feel like a new person now that I am completely mobile again. Best wishes, Tony

Chronicallyill, it depends on who you ask.  My GI took me off of 6-mp because I'm also taking Humira and he said new research was showing you shouldn't be on 6-mp, methotrexate, etc. along with a TNF blocker.  My rheumy, on the other hand, suggested me taking methotrexate along with my Humira because my arthritis is really flaring right now.  To make both happy, we settled on trying sulfasalazine with the Humira first and then, if that doesn't work, trying methotrexate.

I've been on Remicade, Cimzia and Humira and can say that none of them have helped my arthritis enough.  Some arthritis meds we tried hurt my stomach or else they did nothing.  Pain meds were the same, although I am taking Hydrocodone currently.  My GI has recommended trying Tysabri, but I think I'm too scared for that at this point.  I'm sorry to hear that so many others are in the same boat as me, because I know how bad of a boat that is!

Crohn's Disease, Acid Reflux/Gastritis, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Endometriosis, Arthritis, Depression/Anxiety.  Too many meds to list them all.  =)

Yes, methotrexate can be used at same time as Remaicde (and humira)
It's usually used for a few months to ensure the remicade works (or thgat you don't get a reaction to the remicade?)
In UK they usually usde it for 3 months max.
I'm in ireland and was on it for more than a year with Remicade, I was then taken off it and developed reaction to remicade (don't know if there was a connection)

I'm on Humira now for about 4 or more months and the was on the methotrexate before that, and am still on the methotreate

I take methotrexate along with infliximab for Crohn's and arthritis - if my joints have flared I''ve noticed a difference within 48 hours after infliximab on the joints, its been amazing stuff for me I hope it continues to work as well as it has in the past, its been a lifesaver!

Maybe its worth getting some steroids injected straight into the affected joint to see if it gives you some relief in the meantime?
