I have a screaming urinary tract infection.  I haven't had one in years, and forgot just how bad they were! smhair    My general doctor prescribed Septra DS also known as Bactrim.  I've taken it before and tolerate it very well, but have never taken an antibiotic with Crohn's.  Has anyone taken this with Crohn's?  Should I be concerned?  I would contact my GI, but he is out of town.  I'm in so much pain from the UTI that I might just start taking it now.....  I think I'd drink arsenic if it would take this pain away! shakehead   Thank you for any replies.  Blessings, Julie

I used antibiotics and it helped. I drink watered down cranberry juice if its just starting and I can catch it in time. How about asking a pharmasa?(How do you spell that) Hopefully you get some relief soon. Lots of water is the old fashion answer.

I think the Septra should be okay for UTI. I would go ahead and get started on it so you can get some relief from the pain. I use to use Septra for UTI's and it always worked well until I developed a sulfa allergy.

Good luck,

I have taken bactrim many times, it does work and it caused me no additional problems, but that was before being dx with Crohn's. One doc told me a while back that if you take Cipro for a UTI, you are less likely to get one soon after. At the time I was getting them every 3-6 months. So now I ask for Cipro, and I don't get UTI's nearly as often, maybe once a year. Though I also drink cranberry juice like water! Seriously, I buy huge jugs of it at Sam's Club.

Also if you're in a lot of pain they should give you the analgesic, phenazopyridine, it turns your urine orange but it takes the pain away very quickly--faster than with the antibiotics alone. If you can talk to a  nurse he/she should be able to prescribe it for you.

Thank you for all of the feedback/suggestions. I took the first pill this morning. Hopefully it won't bother me. However, I'm flaring right now, so I guess it doesn't matter, lol! Blessings, Julie
