I have been having a tough time lately with a stricture, intermittent constipation, diarrhea, etc.  Now I have terrible bloating and nausea, despite just doing a liquid diet. (No obstruction as per x-ray.)  My GI had once suggested Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth.  Has anyone ever had this?  What were your symptoms?  Treatment?  As always, thank you for your time!  Blessings, Julie :-)

I have never had small bowel bacterial overgrowth before, so I don't know what the treatment is. But I do know that probiotics really help to prevent it. I take a Lactobaccillus probiotic daily and it has really made a big change for me. I was going 4-5 times a day, very D like, and now I only go 1-2 fairly normal stools a day. Hope that helps a little.

I've heard of it. My GI mentioned he thought I might be having a "bout" with it back in November, 2007. He called it SIBO - Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth - and prescribed Xifaxan.

I was having what I call "ice pick prickly pains" in my upper stomach/intestine that would immediately send me to the bathroom with LBM's (loose bowel movements as I like to call them...not quite D but not quite a normal BM either!)

However, in my case, I don't remember that Rx actually helping very much. Well, I guess it DID take away the prickly pains but by January, 2008 I was in a full-blown flare that lasted 8-months.

This will sound weird, but I'm curious about your nausea. Do you just feel nauseous or are you actually vomiting? If you're vomiting, do you vomit WHILE having a BM or does the vomiting come by itself? Can strictures cause vomiting?
Diagnosed in October, 2004 at age 32.
37/F/SC
Current Rx's: Colazal (generic), Omeprazole, Ferrous Sulfate, Librax, One-A-Day multivitamin, Probiotic, Omega-3 Fish Oil, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Calcium-Magnesium-Zinc, Cranberry pills
Secondary conditions: mouth ulcers, joint pain, swelling ankles, extreme fatigue
Previous/occasional Rx's: 20mg Prednisone taper, Flagyl, Levaquin
No surgeries to date

I think I'll increase my probiotic from once a day to twice a day.

Julie, I had a small bowel resection in 1978, enjoyed a 20 year remission before it returned. Fortunately the Crohn's has not been as aggressive since its return. However, I do have a high grade partial obstruction at the old resection site that will have to be dealt w/eventually.

I did suffer w/small bowel bacterial overgrowth for quite some time. And, yes, the symptoms were bloating and nausea. Dr May, from CCFA's now defunct Ask the Specialist forum, first suggested the possibility of bacterial overgrowth and antibiotics for it. Cleveland Clinic also suggested antibiotics. I was on ampicillin the first 10 days of every month followed by tetracycline the first 10 days of alternating months for about a year. I also took a good mixed probiotic 15 days out of every month (Enterobiotic was the brand my pharmacist recommended). It no time I could tell just by symptoms when I was due for the tet or ampicillin and it was longer period of time between alternating them.

Now, some crohnies do NOT do well w/antibiotics. I've always responded well to them. But then when we considered which antibiotics to use we opted to use some of the older antibiotics that weren't quite so broad spectrum. This was BEFORE Xifaxan was approved. Certainly Xifaxan would be a good choice today.

Also, I could tell my gut was responding to the alternating antibiotics w/in just a few days, definitely w/in the first 5 days. And I could tell when I was due for them to by the return of some queasies, nausea or bloating.
Some people are like Slinkies... Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Julie, I get bacterial overgrowth and I take XIFAXAN 200MG, 2 a day for 7 days. It helps a lot. My GI tried me on two others but one I ended up in the hospital for 6 days, and 13 IV's and then got CDif. This on is not like the other two. It lasts for a month or so.
